Empowering Change through a Systematic, Gender Transformative Co-production Process: Reflections from the ARISE&WIN Study On this final day of the year 2024, I am grateful for the opportunity to reflect on the ARISE&WIN Journey. I think of the great expectation placed in our hearts and hands to drive change and the potential to bring change to the labour force landscape in Nigeria, where 80% of workers and 86% of women are self-employed. I am grateful for this immense funding opportunity to derive interventions through a systematic, structured, creative, innovative, gender transformative, co-production process that has the potential to make self-employed young women resilient as they face life challenges similar to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. What a tremendous responsibility and opportunity! Therefore, I welcome you to Volume 1, Issue 11 of our ARISE&WIN newsletter for September to December 2024 with much delight and fulfilment after a year of hard work, partnerships, mentoring, and growth for me and the awesome ARISE&WIN team! A 2-year project to design better supportive structures for self-employed young women in Nigeria.
About us
The ARISE&WIN Project is a 2-year project that aims to understand the gendered impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and other disruptive life events on the physical, mental, and social well-being of self-employed young women in Nigeria; their strategies for coping with such events, and how these compare with those of self-employed men. The findings from this research will inform the co-production of a gender-transformative intervention that integrates social protection and promotes well-being. The project is run by researchers at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and the Douglas Hospital Research Centre, Canada.

Week 2 Update of the Advancing Resiliency in Self-Employed Young Women in Nigeria (ARISE&WIN) Intervention Training The ARISE&WIN Intervention Programme continued this week with impactful training sessions to empower self-employed young women in Nigeria. The week began with the Health and Wellness Module, focusing on the topic, "How to Take Care of Your Reproductive Health." The participants gained valuable insights into maintaining mutually beneficial sexual relationships with their partners. The session also covered maternal health and family planning, equipping women to make informed decisions that enhance their well-being and business productivity pre- and postpartum. Following this, the Business Management and Financial Literacy Module provided practical training to help participants grow and manage their businesses effectively. The sessions included: • ABC of Running a Business • Financial Literacy for Business Owners • Knowledge of Relevant Business and Regulatory Policies for Self-Employed Young Women • Effective Record Keeping for Business Owners • Managing Your Business Like a Pro • My Customer and I These sessions were led by subject matter experts such as Timothy Ibe and Dr. Oyeteju Odufuwa, and self-employed women consultants such as Oluwatomisin Owoade, Adejumoke Ipadeola and Aderayo Animashaun, who engaged participants in discussions, activities, and experience-sharing. The women explored practical strategies to train the participants on how to run their businesses efficiently and meet essential regulatory standards. The self-employed women participants also shared personal stories and experiences dealing with clients and customers, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment. The Week 2 training concluded successfully, fulfilling the team’s mission to build resilience among self-employed young women. The Intervention Programme will resume in January 2025, and we aim to complete the remaining four weeks of training. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to empower women to thrive! #ARISE&WIN #womenempowerment #businesstraining #inancialliteracy #maternalhealth #reproductivehealth #youngwomeninbusiness #empowermentthrougheducation

Week 1 of the ARISE&WIN Intervention Programme Successfully Launched The Advancing Resiliency in Self-Employed Young Women in Nigeria (ARISE&WIN) Intervention Programme commenced this week with the participation of self-employed women from diverse sectors who had successfully enrolled through the efforts of the core team and research assistants. The opening ceremony began with a welcome address from the Principal Investigator, Professor Olayinka Omigbodun, FAS. She provided an overview of the team’s extensive work leading to the successful launch of this initiative. In her remarks, Professor Omigbodun highlighted the co-developed nature of the ARISE&WIN project, which was collaboratively designed with input from self-employed young women, policymakers, and other key stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach. She emphasised the crucial role of self-employed women in Nigeria's economy, noting that 86% of women in the labour force in the country are self-employed. This was followed by a detailed presentation on the Overview of the Intervention Programme by the Lead Post-Doctoral Fellow, Dr Iyeyinka Kusi-Mensah. Addressing the participants, Dr Kusi-Mensah explained the background, objectives, stages, and methodology of the project. Dr Kusi-Mensah also discussed how evaluation is integral to the delivery of the intervention. Data collection will continue into 2025 through surveys, with feedback from participants playing a significant role in refining the programme to benefit more self-employed women in Oyo State and across Nigeria. The training sessions commenced immediately after the opening remarks, with engaging modules designed to promote health and wellness. Topics included ‘Tips for Physically Healthy Living’, ‘A Healthy Body Needs a Healthy Mind’, and ‘How to Take Care of Your Sexual and Reproductive Health’ facilitated by Dr. Alero Adegbolagun, Ms. Deborah Ayanleke, Dr. Tolulope Bella-Awusah, Dr. Rita Tamambang, Mrs Temitope Ajayi and Dr. Olutoyin Sekoni respectively. The facilitators highlighted the critical connection between physical health and employment, emphasising that no work can be sustained without a healthy body. These sessions were interactive and dynamic, featuring exercises, breakout discussions, role-playing, and case studies. Participants actively engaged in activities that promoted both physical and mental well-being. The first week of the intervention concluded with a reminder for the self-employed women to remain committed to the six-week programme to fully benefit from the comprehensive and tailored support it offers.

The ARISE&WIN Intervention Study is underway! A key objective of the ARISE&WIN study is to design programmes and support structures that ensure self-employed young women in Nigeria are resilient and able to thrive. To this end, we announce that members of the ARISE&WIN team have been hard at work on the field, recruiting and enrolling self-employed young women (15-35 years) who will participate in our Intervention programme. Field visits in the last 3 weeks include Community/Local Government Area entries, market mop ups, and visits to the places of business of self-employed women in Ibadan, including women living with disabilities. All in all the recruitment process has been successful so far and efforts will continue towards the start date for our intervention programme which draws nearer. #ARISEandWIN #WomeninBusiness #IbadanBusiness.

Day 3 of Training Research Assistants: Field Work Begins with Pre-testing Evaluation Instruments Yesterday, we completed the third day of our Research Assistant training. The day began with a valuable presentation by our Lead Postdoctoral Research Fellow, who guided the team through essential fieldwork procedures to ensure accuracy and consistency in data collection. Following this session, we launched our Pilot Field Work, heading out into the community to meet with Self-Employed Young Women (SEYW) directly in their shops and offices. This field experience was a collaborative effort by the ARISE&WIN core team and our newly trained Research Assistants. Together, we administered outcomes and Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) questionnaires to gather insights into the physical, mental, and financial well-being of SEYW. We also took the opportunity to engage with members of the support network of the SEYW, who shared their perspectives on the types of assistance SEYW may need to thrive. After completing the fieldwork, our team returned to the office for a debrief and review session. This wrap-up allowed us to reflect on the day’s insights, discuss challenges faced in the field, and further refine our approach as we prepare for the full-scale fieldwork in the coming days. Stay tuned for more updates!

Day 2 Recap: Empowering Our Research Assistants for Field Success Just wrapped up Day 2 of our Research Assistant Training! Today’s session continued with more ethical training this time focused on handling open-ended questions and non-response while on the field. Participants were taught how to properly and respectfully navigate non-response, emotional respondents or long-winded answers. The training also covered effective strategies for administering questionnaires using cue cards. Another break-out session today included some Self Employed Women representatives. The participants practised administering the questionnaires to the Self Employed Women and collected data as they would on the field. This interactive session was invaluable as it provided the Core Team with the opportunity to make necessary adjustments to our fieldwork plans. Our trainees are now more equipped to handle field assignments! Today’s session was an inspiring time of learning, collaboration and the continued theme of co-production on the ARISE&WIN study. We are looking forward to having our trainees out on the field putting their newly found knowledge to practice!
