As I shared on my social media page May 7, 2024 - another FSU semester is in the books...It was incredibly tough, yet I truly gave it my all and fought harder - as it got harder. I hope my Mum would be proud. LIT 3438 Literature and Medicine - Grade: A. PAD 4372 Leadership and Communication in Emergency Management - Grade: A. Current FSU GPA: 3.977 (July 2022 - May 2024) I finished my minor/certificate program in Emergency Management this spring semester, so onward to finishing my major (Bachelor's in English, Editing, Writing, and Media). Many in my path thought I already had my degree(s) (I have nearly 26 years' experience as a risk/crisis communicator and emergency management responder - yet in the business world, somehow that doesn't count); I originally was a Music Major and then life happened. My first career was in the travel industry as a corporate/leisure agent and manager, and then I literally fell into the Emergency Management field and became a PIO. Though I'm not in that role right now, it will always be my passion. The good news is I still get to brag on the many PIO students and spokespersons I and my former team/colleagues have trained throughout the years - I'm so very proud of them. So... SURE Trust here: The image pertains to the ongoing Life Skills Training (LST) at SURE Trust. In this session, participants are undergoing mock interviews conducted by two senior corporate executives who also perform real-world interviews. SURE Trust mandates two LST sessions monthly on alternate Sundays, from 6 pm to 7 pm. These sessions aim to equip students with various life skills, such as building a personal brand on social media, fostering a culture of giving back among the youth, personal healthcare, and financial management, to name a few.

𝙄𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙙𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣 𝙈𝙎𝙘? I had my first shift as a 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿 during 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆 in the Biosciences section. It was amazing to meet so many curious prospective MSc and PhD students, answer their questions, and share what life at Birmingham is like. One common question was: “𝗜𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗦𝗰?” My take: It depends on your goals! An MSc is worth it if you want to: • Specialize in a subject you’re passionate about. • Pursue a career in academia or research. • Stand out in competitive industry roles with advanced skills. ✨ To all those applying to the University of Birmingham or any other university, here’s my honest advice: ✅ 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 you’re 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘆 interested in. Don’t just accept a course because you got in—check the curriculum and modules before applying to avoid regret later. ✅𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀. While affordability is important, don’t choose a university solely because it’s a cheaper option. Take time to research rankings and 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 the institution aligns with your academic and career aspirations. ✅ 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗩. It can be 2-3 pages, highlighting your research and academic achievements—it’s not the same as a job CV. ✅ 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗢𝗣. I’ve seen many students get into top universities because of their Statement of Purpose, even if their grades weren’t stellar. Your SOP is your chance to tell your story and show why you’re a perfect fit for the course. Answering and guiding students was genuinely fun, and if anyone reading this has specific questions about applying, writing an SOP, or navigating this journey, feel free to reach out. Today, I spent much of the day reflecting on a conversation with a friend about the significance of post-nominals. My friend was keen to express gratitude for achieving academic qualifications, viewing them as a hallmark of success. However, they didn't fully acknowledge my point that academic qualifications represent only a small aspect of overall competence. Until recently I had been working as a consultant for eight years, managing over 30 businesses across various industries, each with different levels of risk. To effectively advise these businesses, I had to quickly gain an understanding of their unique challenges and environments, thus accumulating a broad and practical experience. This hands-on experience has been crucial in developing my competence. It's important to recognise that competence goes beyond academic qualifications. It encompasses a wider range of factors, including practical experience, problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and continuous learning. While academic achievements are valuable, they are just one piece of the puzzle. The true measure of competence lies in the ability to apply knowledge and skills in real-world situations, adapt to new challenges, and continuously improve. In essence, we should remember the broader meaning of competence and appreciate the diverse paths that contribute to it.

"The careers PGRs enter following the long-awaited thesis submission and viva are varied and often there is no common or straight forward path to follow. Some have a clear career that they want to pursue while others are open to many different options. For those of us who support and supervise PGRs, it is important to have constructive conversations about PGRs’ priorities for their own professional development and what they want out of a future career. At the University of Glasgow, we encourage viewing careers as evolving processes rather than one-off decisions. On the importance of staff support (or the admin staff are the real heart of a university). When interviewing for a new position, pay close attention to how the staff are treated and how they treat the faculty. Why? Two reasons. First, when faculty treat the staff with respect, it's a signal of culture. As a new faculty member, you will need to be treated with kindness and respect, if you are to navigate the peer review and teaching review process unscathed. Faculty who treat staff with respect are far more likely to be kind and respectful of each other. You want to be part of a faculty with a supportive culture, so this cue is particularly important. Second, staff who are respectful of faculty make #academiclife so much better. As a new faculty member, you will need a lot of paperwork processed, advice on how processes work, and more. The staff hold the keys to so much of that knowledge. In fact, at some universities, a staff member will be the de facto day-to-day department chair - managing paperwork, resource allocation, and more. So be attentive to how the staff operate. You want to work at a place where the staff are attentive to small details, such as processing paperwork and securing signatures, and who are patient; when you fail to pay attention to such details, because they will make your academic life better. The very best places I've worked have mutual respect between faculty and staff; and staff who demonstrate they are respected by helping young faculty navigate their first years of academic life. If you detect contempt or incompetence on either level, seriously consider all of your alternatives on the job market - you do not want to work at a place that lacks a civil culture.
