🎤 And we’re off! We are incredibly excited to start the Amsterdam Neuroscience Annual Meeting 2024. Kicking off the morning are our directors, Guus Smit, Yolande Pijnenburg and Marten Smidt. Next, prof. dr. Marjo van der Knaap and her team will give a comprehensive overview of the field of leukodystrophies, and the incredible developments we have seen in 35 years of research. Afterwards, speakers from Young Amsterdam Neuroscience will take the stage. We can’t wait to see what the day has in store for us. Curious about the programme? Amsterdam Neuroscience: connecting the people, the science and the brain.
Over ons
Amsterdam Neuroscience is the research institute for neuroscience of Amsterdam UMC and the science faculties of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam. Researchers and clinicians from these three institutions join forces in the field of fundamental, translational and clinical brain research. This collaboration strengthens the scientific excellence in this area, making Amsterdam Neuroscience one of the largest neuroscience communities in Europe. To enable translational neuroscience research, we develop and translate neuroscience knowledge into applications for patients. Amsterdam Neuroscience focuses on scientific excellence, young talent and innovation in four cross-disciplinary research programs. In addition, there are five clinical research programs that focus on both existing and new treatments for a number of brain and nervous system diseases, including neurological, neurovascular and psychiatric disorders. Amsterdam Neuroscience’s overall mission is to broaden the fundamental knowledge of the human brain and nervous system, and to translate this into effective therapies and treatments for the individual patient.

🙌 Congratulations to Associate Professor and senior scientist at Amsterdam Neuroscience and Amsterdam UMC - Alzheimercentrum Amsterdam Betty Tijms! She has been awarded the European Research Council (ERC) – Consolidator Grant. With nearly 3 million euros in funding, she will investigate whether the five biological variants of Alzheimer’s disease, that she previously discovered, respond differently to medication.

✨ 𝐄𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐢𝐣𝐳𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐠 𝐯𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐳𝐨𝐞𝐤! 🌟

This #WorldStrokeDay, we are excited to share that a large international study led by Amsterdam UMC supports new treatment for cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT), a rare type of stroke. The recently revealed results suggest that patients with CVT can be safely and efficaciously treated with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). This finding has important implications for patient management. “In general, DOACs are more patient friendly, as they do not require dose adjustments based on plasma concentrations. They also have a lower risk of intracranial hemorrhage,” says Jonathan Coutinho, stroke neurologist and lead researcher. Dr. Amélie Fréal, assistant professor at Amsterdam UMC and researcher at the Cellular & Molecular Mechanisms research programme at Amsterdam Neuroscience, has received a Vidi grant of 850.000 euros from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). Congratulations, Amélie! The Vidi grant is aimed at postdoc researchers with academic qualities that clearly exceed what is customary and who are transitioning to leadership. With this grant, Amélie will be able to continue her research on understanding the mechanisms controlling the composition of the axon initial segment. 💊 The existing HIV drug Efavirenz may also be effective for patients with Alzheimer's disease. The clinical trial to test this will start this fall at Amsterdam UMC. The research is led by researcher Rik van der Kant and neurologist Everard (Jort) Vijverberg from Amsterdam UMC - Alzheimercentrum Amsterdam. Van der Kant discovered that an accumulation of cholesterol in the brain cells of Alzheimer's patients directly leads to an accumulation of the toxic proteins Tau and Amyloid. The drug Efavirenz turned out to be suitable for reversing this accumulation. “You don't believe it at first, but all subsequent tests showed the same result,” says Van der Kant. Vijverberg is also hopeful. “It remains a matter of first seeing and then believing, but I see it as a promising step in the right direction.” The trial is still looking for participants. In total, forty patients with early-stage Alzheimer's are needed to participate in the clinical trial, which will last three months. Read more ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e2UWXDuC
