Today marks the fifth death anniversary of BRAC’s founder, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed. In 1972, he sold his apartment in London and left his job as an accountant to provide a hand of assistance to Bangladeshi refugee returnees who were displaced during the liberation war, and thus, BRAC was born. More than five decades later, BRAC now partners with over 100 million people across the world, with the overarching goal of building a world free from all forms of exploitation and discrimination where everyone has the opportunity to realise their potential. As we remember him today, let’s look back at the life of the man who made BRAC possible.

If a girl doesn’t know what her rights are, then how will she ever fight for them? Violence against women and girls stems first from not knowing, not knowing about your body, your right to consent or to make informed choices. This is the first of a two-part series where we shine light on stories from the last mile - of young girls and women getting and using the opportunities they need to reach their full potential.
