#96 | CFLW Highlight - 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗠𝗦𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗼𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀 Setting up a web crawler is easy, to make sure that all relevant data is collected by crawling is an art. During his master thesis, Georgios Kedaritis set out the ambitious task to define 𝗪𝗲𝗯 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. At first glance, it sounds trivial and like an answer that should be obvious after many years of research and innovation into crawling technology. However, his work is the first attempt to define a 𝗪𝗲𝗯 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. A unique framework is proposed and evaluated using a series of crawlers. The discovery that different crawlers achieve different results for the same website identified another pressing problem: 𝗪𝗲𝗯 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆! University cooperations and internships like this are an invaluable part of our team, sparking fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. This pioneering research was carried out in partnership with University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), with supervision and reviewing by Kostas Papagiannopoulos, Anuj Pathania (UvA), Eljo Haspels and Mark van Staalduinen (CFLW). Congratulations Georgios! 🎉

#93 | CFLW Announcement - 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗩𝗲𝗹𝘆𝗮𝗻: 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁! Building on the success of last year’s master projects and internships, we are excited to welcome Velyan Kolev from Delft University of Technology to the CFLW team. His passion for cybersecurity and research makes him a great addition to our team. We are thrilled to provide Velyan with hands-on experience and mentorship throughout his thesis journey. 🔍 𝗩𝗲𝗹𝘆𝗮𝗻’𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 While the Dark Web offers technical anonymity online, this right to privacy is also abused for illegal activities. There are many possible approaches to link illegal websites and infer relevant links and structures. This is what Velyan will investigate in the coming months. The goal is to discover patterns in the behavior and strategies used by malicious actors that can ultimately be disrupted by the authorities. University cooperations and internships like this are an invaluable part of our team, sparking fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲, 𝗩𝗲𝗹𝘆𝗮𝗻— we are excited to support your journey! #CFLWTeam #CybersecurityIntern #DarkWebResearch #InnovationInCyber #FreshPerspectives #CyberThreatAnalysis

#88 | CFLW Highlights – 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝘆𝗽𝘁𝗼-𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀, 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶-𝗣𝗵𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗪𝗲𝗯 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗮 It’s been an inspiring two days in Vienna! Our visit included a radio interview, progress meetings where we shared updates on the 𝗖𝗙𝗟𝗪 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 and the 𝗕𝗶𝗴𝗣𝗵𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 led by Bavarian Central Office for the Prosecution of Cybercrime (ZCB), and participation in the 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 event organized by Iknaio Cryptoasset Analytics and the Complexity Science Hub Vienna, held at their venue. Key takeaways from the event highlighted the complexity of digital crime investigations and the growing need for seamless data access and interoperability. As 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲, managing the volume and complexity of crypto asset investigations demands both 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 and a deep understanding of criminality. 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 is essential in closing these gaps and moving towards a safer cyberspace.
