Last week, on October 17-18, Prof. Harold Snieder participated in the Symposium on Aging & Fit-Life at Universitätsklinikum Tübingen in the picturesque town of Tübingen, Germany. It was an inspiring event with the opportunity to explore shared interests and collaborate on exciting plans to establish a three-generation cohort (Fit-Life) to study healthy aging with Prof. Dr. Norbert Schmitz and Manu Sharma. Upon the invitation of Prof. Youren Chen from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College, a five-member delegation led by Prof. Harold Snieder from the University of Groningen, Netherlands, arrived in Shantou on May 15 to initiate academic exchanges and visits. Since the inception of the joint doctoral training program between Shantou University Medical College and the University of Groningen in 2009, 37 students and young faculty members have participated, underscoring the program's significance to Shantou University Medical College. On the morning of May 16, Vice Dean Zeng of Shantou University Medical College hosted a welcome ceremony and presented gifts to Prof. Harold Snieder's delegation. Subsequently, team members Hellen, Zekai Chen, Ilja, Tian, and Harold delivered a series of presentations on the theme of "Cardiometabolic Disorders – Focus on Genetics." The session was characterized by lively interactions and frequent applause, indicating its success. In the afternoon, Prof. Snieder's delegation engaged in further discussions with Prof. Chen's group to explore potential future collaborations. The delegation also visited Shantou University and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College. This week, Professor Harold Snieder is leading a delegation from the Epidemiology Department at UMCG on a significant academic journey to Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. Joining him are our colleagues dr.Ilja Nolte, Zekai Chen, and several talented students from china. On May 13th, they were hosted by Professor Xia Huo at Jinan University for enriching academic discussions. The following day, an invitation from Professor Kaixin Zhou brought them to Guangzhou Laboratory, where we continued the fruitful exchanges. During these visits, Professor Snieder and Ilja Nolte delivered insightful keynote presentations on Lifelines and GWAS, respectively. Complementing these were valuable contributions from students of both our team and the host institutions, leading to robust discussions and innovative brainstorming sessions. These interactions are foundational for establishing strong future collaborations. The journey continues as they head to Shantou University on May 15th. OncoLifeS is a UMCG based data-biobank that has been designed to facilitate cancer research by providing clear phenotypic and genotypic data in a clinical context. OncoLifeS researchers investigate cancer risk factors, better treatment options and how to increase patients' quality of life. For this, researchers collect blood and tumour tissue, as well as data on lifestyle, quality of life and CT images.   OncoLifeS has been collecting data and bodily material from cancer patients for research since 2014 and it is included it's 10,000th patient a couple of months ago.
