✨ Exciting News from the EU STEM Coalition! ✨   We had the honor of meeting with Vanessa Debiais-Sainton, cabinet member of EU Commissioner Roxana Minzatu, to discuss the future of STEM education across Europe.   A big thank you to Mrs. Debiais-Sainton for her time and for the insightful conversation. We explored the vital role STEM plays in shaping our society and exchanged actionable strategies for advancing STEM education. It’s clear that across Europe, networks and best practices are already making a difference—and together, we can build on this momentum to strengthen the STEM ecosystem further.   At the EU STEM Coalition, we are proud to have a strong network, deep knowledge, and the infrastructure to accelerate the rollout of a EU STEM strategic plan. We’re committed to working closely with the Commission to ensure that every region and country has a tailored STEM Action Plan to drive impact and success.   We also highlighted the importance of collecting and analyzing data to showcase the impact of STEM, ensuring that we can demonstrate its true value. We look forward to continuing to collaborate as a community of practice and pushing forward with EU-wide STEM initiatives! Yet, a critical obstacle stands in the way: a growing shortage of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) talent. The Association of Nordic Engineers (ANE) and Hanne SHAPIRO have released a roadmap, "Reclaiming Europe’s Edge: Competitiveness through STEM Talent," outlining how Europe can reclaim its global leadership. 🚨 The Challenges Ageing workforce and STEM talent gaps Fragmented markets and innovation ecosystems Lagging R&D investment High operational costs Without action, Europe risks falling further behind global leaders like the US and China. 🔑 The Solutions Elevate STEM on the Political Agenda: Integrate STEM skills into EU Council priorities and reporting. Boost R&D Investments: Fund breakthrough technologies and modernise infrastructure. Scale Deep-Tech Startups: Simplify regulations and support venture capital. 🌟 Empowering Diversity in STEM Education Across Europe 🌍 We’re excited to share the STEM EUROPE Project, an ambitious initiative under Erasmus+ focused on bridging skills gaps and promoting diversity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education. 💡 Key Highlights: Establishing six regional Centers of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs) in the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Turkey, Kosovo, and Italy. Creating inclusive learning environments with diversity training for educators and employers. Engaging underrepresented groups—women, migrants, and low-income communities—through mentorship programs, hackathons, and afterschool activities. Aligning vocational education with industry needs by fostering public-private partnerships. This project not only addresses Europe's labor shortages in STEM but also sets the stage for long-term innovation and sustainability by embracing inclusion. Through collaboration, policy advocacy, and knowledge-sharing, STEM EUROPE ensures that no talent is left behind in shaping the green and digital future. 📢 Exciting news for education in Europe! The new EU Commission has announced plans to work on several key initiatives for education, including the Union of Skills and a dedicated STEM Education Strategic Plan. This aligns with the Draghi Report's recommendations on strengthening European competitiveness. Commissioner Roxana Minzatu is holding open discussions with numerous organisation—spanning primary to higher education, VET, industry, and more. We’re thrilled to share that the EU STEM Coalition was invited to contribute to one of these discussions and provide input for the STEM education strategic plan. Our key focus points include: 1️⃣ Leveraging our extensive triple helix network (education, government, industry, and societal partners) across Europe to enhance the attractiveness of STEM, as highlighted in our past Swedish STEM conference in Malmö. 🚀 How can we close the STEM gender gap? In a recent episode of the OECD Education and Skills Podcast, our chair, Beatrice Boots, joined Priscilla Gatonye from UNESCO to discuss the critical issue of gender disparity in STEM fields. 🔍 Key insights from the discussion: Despite performing equally well as boys in STEM subjects by age 15, many girls face confidence issues and stereotypes that deter them from pursuing STEM careers. Beatrice highlighted the economic importance of increasing women's participation in STEM, referencing the report by Draghi on Europe's competitiveness. 🌟 The EU STEM Coalition at the Hungarian STEM Platform Conference On 12-13 December 2024, the Hungarian STEM Platform hosted the Hungarian STEM Platform Conference, gathering leaders from education, industry, and policy to discuss the future of STEAM education across Europe. 💬 Joep Bresser of the EU STEM Coalition delivered a presentation on the importance of cross-border collaboration and aligning national strategies with EU priorities. He commended Hungary’s efforts in building a strong STEM ecosystem and highlighted the Hungarian STEM Platform as a key player in addressing Europe’s STEM talent gap and driving innovation. ✨ Conference Highlights: 🔹 Zoltan Marton, Director of the Hungarian STEAM Platform, opened closed the event, emphasizing the platform’s role in connecting national initiatives with international expertise to advance STEAM education and workforce readiness. 🔹 Panel discussions covered critical issues in STEAM education, including industry collaboration and Joep Bresser’s vision for CoVE STEM Europe, a new initiative that strengthens regional cooperation across Europe. 🔹 Experts like Gultekin Cakmakciçı (Hacettepe University), Milena Y.
