Breaking Barriers: Making Justice Work for Women in Iraq Navigating housing, land, and property rights can be intimidating for women in Iraq due to social stigma, bureaucratic hurdles and limited access to legal information. In our last post, we introduced Hevrin Yousif from Dak Organization who is empowering Yazidi women to claim their property rights. Today, we’re spotlighting another changemaker tackling a different justice challenge. 👉 Meet Helez and the Legal Oasis Initiative, a mobile legal clinic. Many women hesitate to seek legal help due to social stigma, so instead Legal Oasis brings legal services directly to them, ensuring they receive support in a safe and comfortable environment. So far 132 women have already received direct legal consultations and awareness sessions. Another 500 people have benefited through field and online awareness campaigns. 💡 Investing in justice isn’t just about fairness—it’s about creating safer, more stable communities where people can rebuild their lives and contribute to the economy. 🎥 Watch the video to hear how Helez and the Legal Oasis Initiative are making justice more accessible and helping women in Sinjar rebuild their lives. Together with UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), supported by the , we work with changemakers like Heliz to scale their impact and make justice more accessible. Making Justice Work for People in Iraq The aftermath of the conflict has left deep scars, displacing over 6 million people. While many have returned, legal barriers, lost documents, and unresolved land disputes are making it incredibly difficult for people to reclaim their homes and property. Since 2023, we’ve been working with partners in Iraq to explore ways to address the justice challenges faced by forcibly displaced populations. Most recently with UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency we’ve supported grassroots organizations with training, coaching and funding—helping them scale practical, people-centred justice solutions. From guiding women through Iraq’s property laws to securing legal support for displaced families, these changemakers are making a real impact and we are putting a spotlight on them this week. 👉 First meet Hevrin from DAK. Based in Sinjar, where over 250,000 people were displaced, her initiative is empowering Yazidi women to claim their housing, land and property rights. Thanks to their work, 34 women have already been connected to legal representation. 💡 Investing in justice isn’t just about fairness—it’s about creating safer, more stable communities where people can rebuild their lives and contribute to the economy. 🎥 Watch the video to see how Hevrin and DAK are making a difference in Sinjar. #Iraq #HLP

Our key takeaways from the Munich Security Conference: Conversations on security, stability and global world order must be about people. People need solutions to their daily problems, and democracy must provide the enabling system to deliver them. A people-centered justice system—where individuals can resolve disputes fairly and efficiently—is essential for stability and economic growth. Read Jude Udo Ilo's take below ⬇️ #MSC2025
From Munich with Cautious Optimism The just concluded Munich Security Conference lived up to its billing as one of the most important platforms for dialogue on global security. It was happening against the backdrop of significant global developments. With the unilateral engagement of United States with Russia to end the Ukrainian war, European leaders had very strong word for America but most importantly, Europe is reassessing its relationship with America. Ukrainian President was clear about the determination of Ukraine not to be a bystander in discussions about its future. The recent development in DRC and the progress being made by the Rwanda backed M23 in battlefields in Goma and neighboring towns came to an explosive point in the conference floor. Similarly, conversations about Sudan were heated. Here are my major takeaways from the conference: 1. As I said in the panel on economic security (EY@MSC event) and the place of Africa in current global conversation (hosted by Institute for Security Studies), Africa is the beautiful bride. Europe should look more to Africa for new partnerships that addresses economic security concerns of both regions. Africa has an abundance of affordable labor, clean energy and mineral resources. Europe can benefit from these by forging a partnership that is built on mutual respect and shared prosperity. Africa is not a charity case. African leaders must create the business-friendly environment for this new partnership and a system of rule of law. 2. Conversations on security, stability and global world order must be about people. Listening to some of the conversation on DRC, Sudan and Ukraine, the human toll and suffering seem not be the driving force of negotiations on ground. No person should suffer harm because of the political, regional and global ambition of politicians. 3. Democracy is being redefined in dangerous terms. Political mandate is being framed as immunity for executive rascality and ‘good intentions’ of government is being offered up as superior to constitutional restrictions. Free speech is accorded immunity from restraints or qualifications. These are the language of authoritarianism and fascism. Like cancer, it starts small. We must begin to push back and build a solidarity bridge across countries.. 4. Similarly, we must see democracy as a means to an end and not an end in itself. People need solutions to their daily problems and democracy must provided the enabling system that offers those solutions. 5. Finally, we need to find common values. People centered justice system that allows for individuals to resolve their justice needs fairly and timely is fundamental to stability and economic growth. Rule of law ensures certainty of law and equal application of the law to all that come before it. HiiL | User-friendly Justice’s Justice Needs Survey in about 27 countries shows the importance and feasibility of building justice systems premised on peoples’ daily needs.

“The energy in the rooms, hallways, and side-events was palpable. Governments, policy experts, and civil society organizations drew strength from each other, recognizing that the massive challenges we face—climate change, democratic backsliding, disinformation, and growing mistrust—cannot be tackled alone. Partnerships are not just important; they are essential.” At the Open Government Partnership Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting in Manila, HiiL’s Swati Mehta joined inspiring conversations on partnerships, justice and governance at a critical moment for open government. In her latest blog, she shares key takeaways on what it takes to move from commitments to action and lessons from justice leaders across the region. The larger the economy, in most cases, also the injustices. This alliance brings hope… that justice becomes more accessible, more specific to people, more realizable…." 🌍⚖️We look forward to working with partners to make this vision a reality! 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eFEQ9W_Z
