What linguistic rights are a part of your classroom? Over the last couple of years one of the first units my ten year old students inquire into are a citizen's rights and responsibilities. We look at the formation of the UN and the EU, the Conventions of the Rights of the Child, and then consider our rights and responsibilities as members of our school and classroom. This is when we formulate our classroom agreements and linguistic rights is one of the topics we consider. When can I use my other languages? We consider academic and social implications through role play and situation cards. We then add these points to our learning. There is so much to unpack in this second quote from the book I am currently reading but this is what I thought when I read it. What do the walls of your classroom say about your students? What do they say about how they think, how they communicate, and what knowledge they bring with them? I have always tried to have documenting student thinking as an important part of my practice... as with everything, sometimes with great success than other times. One simple story that contributed to my journey with PerLinguas was the Sloth watercolour. Below you can see a paining by a 7 year old artist and past student. I remember her work lead to conversation about how the word sloth in English can be applied to a lazy person. The artist said, that’s what it means in Serbian lenjivac is sloth and lenji means lazy. This is an example of this student's metalinguistic awareness. Everyone has their own #linguistic toolbox in which they collect language and from which they use #language. This language might be a part of a larger system such as English, Español, or 한국어(Hangugeo/Korean). It could also be language connected to a particular place such as Bambaiya Hindi from Mumbai, or to a subculture such as Punk. The language we collect is a reflection of our experience and of our #identity. Every student brings an eclectic toolbox of language with them to the #classroom.
