Showpower was founded by some of those best and most experienced in the event industry running sustainable energy consultancy ZAP Concepts, but who saw no other alternative than to put all their efforts into creating a start-up that would become the future of sustainable power for events on the biggest scale The story goes that Paul Schurink, MBE, Rob Scully BSc(Hons) AMEI FIEMA and Tim Benson didn't want to start a new rental company (all 3 had done their fair share in the rental business) but when they realised that what they'd designed had such a huge potential to transition the industry away from diesel generators, coupled with the fact that no-one else knew how to operate what they'd built, they all agreed that they had no choice. We have the whole #Coldplay team and management to thank for being here, Paul Traynor, Lukas Howell MSI CEnv FIEMA FRSA and Hope Solutions for taking the biggest leap into the unknown and trusting the vision of our team, and holding their nerve when the switch went from generator to SmartGrid. No-one had tried to implement an alternative to diesel generator power for 50+ years on the global touring circuit, and its taken 4 years, countless trials and failures (whilst never losing power to a show) to create a successful and 100% reliable prototype in the Showpower SmartGrid . Reflecting on 2023-2024, the SmartGrid has now powered over 50 Coldplay stadium shows in more than 15 countries, the global launch of the 2024 New Electric BMW Group MINI Clubman charging 200 MINIs over 8 weeks with a huge solar array, and then powering the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park. So, that's global stadium touring ✅ , music festivals ✅ and an experiential brand activation all powered with batteries ✅ We also have to thank those industry heavyweights who we've worked with along the way and who are fellow nominees: CES Power, The Powershop, Power Logistics, Buffalo Power and Pearce Hire. And a big thanks to Stew Hume for being so curious and supportive about our journey. This sounds like an acceptance speech. This is a great headline to read today from London Stadium Mayor of London Ameresco and incredibly encouraging for the live events industry. Yes we need all stadiums to have direct access to renewable energy. It makes our job to provide emissions-free power for artists and events so much easier. However it is worth noting that it is only the beginning for events and artists to have access to an "in-house" renewable energy source. For this source to be fully utilised, any touring artist or event production team will need to be fully trusting that the source is 100% reliable.
