Exploring the Semiconductor Ecosystem at NovioTech Campus! (Destination-2) As part of TEGRA IC’s Netherlands semiconductor ecosystem tour, we visited the Noviotech Campus, a vibrant hub for Health and High Tech innovation in Nijmegen. We were warmly welcomed by Wald Been and Marlou Peet-de Bruin, whose exceptional planning and hospitality ensured a seamless and productive visit. During the afternoon, we engaged in insightful discussions with Ampleon and Neways Electronics International NV, two globally renowned semiconductor companies. These meetings provided valuable insights into the thriving ecosystem and potential collaboration opportunities. Additionally, we secured an appointment with NXP Semiconductors for the following day. NovioTech Campus stands out with its strong presence in the semiconductor industry. The campus offers state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced laboratories, cleanrooms, shared amenities, and modern office spaces. It is home to three world-class chip companies—NXP, Ampleon, and Nexperia—and houses Europe’s largest semiconductor production plant. Impressively, all newly manufactured cars globally contain chips from Nijmegen, and 30% of worldwide phone calls rely on radio frequency technology developed on-site. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Wald Been and Marlou Peet-de Bruin from the campus administration for their incredible support, and to Gerrald Korenromp from Oost NL for highlighting exciting opportunities, as well as guiding and accompanying us throughout the day. An Inspiring Visit to Professor Bram Nauta at the University of Twente! On the first day of our journey through the Netherlands’ semiconductor ecosystem, we had the privilege of visiting Professor Bram Nauta in his office at the University of Twente. Before this visit, we already knew about the groundbreaking Nauta Circuit, invented by him in the 1990s, which revolutionized the semiconductor industry and continues to power almost every mobile phone today. During our conversation, we gained invaluable insights into the story behind this innovation and many others that emerged from his visionary work—some of which were understood within 5-7 years, while others gained recognition more than a decade after their inception. He is far ahead of his time. Professor Nauta’s vision for the future is truly inspiring. His philosophy is not about incremental improvements like a mere 10% gain but about achieving pioneering breakthroughs—developing chips that are at least 10 times better in speed, power consumption, and size. Anything less, as he puts it, is simply “nonsense.” We were deeply inspired by his energy, creativity, and the way he spoke about his team. He described their selection process as both rigorous and rewarding, and his pride in assembling “the best of the best” talent from around the world. Statements like “Nauta’s Students Do Silicon” and “We Design for Designers” reflect the high standards and motivation he instills in his team. During our visit, Professor Nauta also highlighted the promising semiconductor ecosystem in University of Twente, emphasizing the collaborative spirit between companies and their invaluable contributions to global giants—all while driving societal progress. After a warm and informative discussion, he graciously gave us a tour of their state-of-the-art laboratories, showcasing the infrastructure equipped to be able to support the emergence of future unicorn technology companies. Before departing, we captured a memorable moment with him in front of the illuminated scale model of the legendary Nauta Circuit at his office window. We left the University of Twente with renewed energy, profound inspiration, and his promise for another meeting in the future. Thank you, Professor Nauta, for your time, vision, and for sharing the legacy you continue to build.
