To develop new scale corrections for propellers using boundary layer tripping

Over ons

The Tripping JIP is initiated by MARIN. The aim of this Joint Industry Project (JIP) is to develop new propeller scale corrections to predict full-scale open water performance and propulsive performance more accurately. On full scale propellers usually operate with turbulent flow. On model scale, however, laminar flow gives uncertainty to the model tests and powering predictions. In the Tripping JIP, turbulators will be applied on a large set of model-scale propellers to trip towards a turbulent flow, resembling the full scale situation more accurate. The Wageningen B-series will be revisited, amongst propellers of the newer Wageningen C- and F-series. The Reynolds scale effects for a fully turbulent flow will be assessed by means of RANS computations. The Tripping JIP will provide new scale corrections (to replace the old ITTC corrections), correlation allowances for RANS computations and a full-scale polynomials for the Wageningen C-series (public) and F-series (restricted). New participants are welcome to join the project and work together on a reliable basis for future powering predictions. The complete proposal and work packages can be found on the website. Research institute MARIN is a provider of advanced expertise and independent research to the maritime industry. Using the newest test facilities and simulators and working together with an extensive innovation and research network we achieve our goal: the development of cleaner, safer and smarter ships and sustainable use of the sea.
