Trust Fund for Victims at the ICC

In the latest episode of our podcast, Horsehair Wigs, the Executive Director of Trust Fund for Victims at the ICC (the reparative arm of the International Criminal Court) Deborah Ruiz Verduzco, PhD, talks to us about the challenges facing, not just the fund, but international criminal justice. Verduczo stresses the importance of reparations to victims, numbering thousands, of convicted persons tried by the court. Although it was set up to operate very differently, the fund is relying heavily on voluntary public and private donations because none of the convicted people tried by the ICC, to date, have had the assets to meet reparations to victims.  Verduczo says the ICC is entering a new era of reparative justice. 📣🇱🇹 The Trust Fund for Victims at the ICC announces with appreciation the unrestricted contribution of Lithuania, a State Party to the ICC since 2003, to the TFV with a total amount of EUR 20,000. 🕊️This contribution will be used to redress the harm suffered by victims of Rome Statute crimes, through reparations awards ordered by the ICC and other programmes for their benefit. 🎙️ Mr Andres Parmas, member of the Board of Directors of the Trust Fund for Victims at the ICC, representing the Eastern European States stated, "Lithuania’s contribution underscores the shared responsibility of States Parties to advance justice and dignity for victims of Rome Statute crimes. 📣 The Trust Fund for Victims at the ICC submitted its Final Report in the case of The Prosecutor v. Germain Katanga 📍 On 2 December 2024, the TFV filed its Final Narrative and Financial Reports on the implementation of the Katanga Reparations Programme before ICC Trial Chamber II. 🕊️ ⚖️ The Katanga reparations programme is the first reparations programme to be completed at the ICC.    This report includes:  1️⃣ Cover Filing   2️⃣ Final Narrative Report of the implementation of reparations in the Katanga case  3️⃣ Final Financial Report of the implementation of reparations in the Katanga case 4️⃣ Evaluation Report by the University of Edinburg, commissioned by the Trust Fund for Victims ▶️ The Final Report, in addition to other Court records in this case, can be found on the Court’s website: https://lnkd.in/dr6rcFXq 🕊️ The Katanga Reparations Programme benefitted individuals who lost family members, suffered physical and psychological harm, and lost their homes, property and livestock as a result of the attack of 24 February 2003 on the village of Bogoro in Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), for which Mr Katanga was held liable by the ICC as an accessory to crimes against humanity and war crimes. 🔗 Visit the TFV website: https://lnkd.in/dy-kv6qw #BuildingSupport #Reparations #KatangaProgramme
