“If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.” - Peter Drucker
I came across this sentence a while ago, and it seems to resonate with me more deeply now. In today’s world, collecting, cleaning, and standardizing data has never been more crucial. By leveraging data, we can make informed decisions, effectively manage our operations, and continuously improve our outcomes.
A little more than a week ago, I participated in the #SevenHillsRace (NN Zevenheuvelenloop). To run these 15km I had to spend much more time with this hobby than I used to:
-Practice more regularly
-Understand the added value of interval training
-Measure my running time with my 5-year-old smartwatch
-Measure the amount of km run every week/month and build up consistently
-Analyse the average time per Km and, depending on the type of training, try improving it
-…
The event was sold out to 28,000 runners, so when the D-day came, Nijmegen was fully packed with lots of people who had devised their own strategies to achieve their individual goal and finish all 15,000 meters. The professional runners started first, and to lessen overcrowding on the course, runners started in waves based on pace. The start and the finish were in the same street, so when my turn was just starting, I had the pleasure to see Jacob Kiplimo arriving and set a new world record to 40m42s . #Amazing #Congratulations
"How did he do it?" was the topic of the day.
I realised that if I wanted to be better—not like Jacob Kiplimo ;)—I needed to dive deeper into the data generated on my watch during and after every time I go outside for a run.
Could I improve my speed while going up the hill? Probably I should measure my cadence. Also, I’d like to retrieve accurately the beats per minute and my old watch couldn’t accurately measure my BPM, so I had to buy a more sophisticated watch that could measure it well and more #DataAnalysis.
I am not trying to become a professional runner, but there is much more I can do to improve this hobby. On my job, I also hear professionals in the #AutomotiveIndustry saying they have data to help them make their decisions until they realise it is possible to dive deeper, access new and more accurate #FactBased insights, see new perspectives, and make better decisions. Many thanks, Mr. Drucker.
