Restoring mangroves for people and planet

About us

A lot of planting projects fail leaving communities without the benefits and protection from mangroves. It shouldn’t be this difficult. MAP provides the training and education programs needed to effectively conserve and restore these vital ecosystems, to help coastal communities and reduce the effects of climate change

  • 📰 This headline sums up everything we stand for! Mass planting schemes are still common around the world. As people become more aware of mangroves’ ability to protect coastlines from storms and capture huge amounts of carbon, it’s seen as a viable conservation strategy. But that’s not the case. While well-intentioned, the majority of planting efforts fail because they: ❌ Don’t take site-specific conditions into account ❌ Don’t address the initial cause of deforestation ❌ Plant the wrong species in the wrong places ❌ Fail to measure the results after planting It’s why we always say conservation must be holistic, rooted in science, and driven by the needs of local communities. • 🤔 Did you know? During the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, mangrove belts helped protect coastal areas by reducing tsunami wave heights by 5-30%. Mangroves are nature’s own defence system, having adapted over the years to withstand natural disasters like tsunamis. ⛈️ But as storms become more extreme, sea levels rise, and wave heights increase, this natural defence system is at risk, along with the lives of millions of coastal communities around the world. Act now and help save mangroves 👉 https://lnkd.in/eWxh3paU #ClimateAdaptation #Tsunami

  • 🤔 Have you ever heard of floating mangroves? Since 2012, UNESCO and other scientific institutes have been researching and experimenting with this idea as a way to alleviate pressure on natural mangrove ecosystems. These "floating forests" are designed to grow on near-shore platforms where communities could potentially use the resources for timber and charcoal. 🇶🇦 The first experimental site in Qatar’s Lusail City reported a 95% survival rate in 2021, but research is still ongoing, and many questions remain about the ecological and social implications. What do you think of the idea? #MangroveConservation #MarineResearch

  • 🖼️ The 2025 Children’s Mangrove Art Calendar is now available! A huge thank you to every child, teacher, and organization that participated this year. We think you’ll agree this year’s calendar is a brilliant expression of how our young artists feel about mangrove ecosystems and the threats they face. 🙌 Our supporters who donate $100 or more will be given a free calendar as a special thank you. You can also request a calendar by contacting Monica: monica@mangroveactionproject.org Learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dKWm5u-7 #MangroveConservation #2025Calendar #ChildrensArt

  • 📈 Want to help fill in knowledge gaps that will guide mangrove restoration best practices? The Mangrove Restoration Tracker Tool was developed by international scientists and conservation practitioners, including MAP’s own Alfredo Quarto and Dominic Wodehouse PhD. The tool is: ✔️ Available to anyone working on a mangrove restoration project ✔️ Designed to track and share data around your project’s outcomes ✔️ Flexible to allow field and desk-based data capture Read the user guide to learn more and sign up 👉 https://lnkd.in/d9esjDSk #MangroveRestoration #BestPractices #DataScience

  • 🇦🇿 We’ve been keeping a close eye on news coming out of COP29 Azerbaijan, billed as the financial COP. Just one day in, delegates approved a new set of standards for a centralized carbon market. These are key to the creation of a United Nations-backed global carbon market, which has been some 10 years in the making and could bolster the demand for mangrove-based blue carbon projects. The negotiations are ongoing, but here are the key developments. ✅ Article 6.4 creates a UN-regulated carbon marketplace where high-emitting nations can buy verified carbon credits from developing countries with proven emission-reduction projects. ✅ COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev estimates the market could save up to $250 billion annually in implementing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). ✅ The deal means the UN will oversee the emissions reductions resulting from the credits, which represent 1 tonne of carbon dioxide removed or avoided. ⚠️ Still, many observers are raising concerns including: - Rushed approval with limited debate - May allow major emitters to avoid direct emissions cuts - Lacks human rights protections for communities affected by carbon projects What are your thoughts? Let us know below! #COP29 #ClimateAction #UNCarbonMarket #MangroveConservation

  • 🌊 Mangroves = Nature’s wave breaker Did you know mangroves can reduce wave height by up to 66% over a distance of 100m*? Over a distance of 500m, they reduce wave height by up to 99%! 🌳 With their tangle of above-ground roots and branches, mangrove trees provide natural protection for coastal communities against storms and flooding. The world is witnessing more severe weather than ever, from extreme storms in the US to typhoons in the Philippines. Now, more than ever, we need to nurture healthy, resilient mangroves so they can do what they do best. 💪 #ClimateAction #MangroveTrees #CoastalCommunities

  • 🌳 What do you think of when you hear the word “forest”? Rainforests? Pine forests? Redwoods? All of these are powerful ecosystems that give us clean air and regulate our climate. 💡 But it’s time we started to think more about the incredible role mangrove forests play in connecting the dots. These ecological superheroes: ✔️ Link land and sea ✔️ Protect, stabilize, and shape our coastlines ✔️ Purify water to keep our marine habitats healthy ✔️ Act as nurseries for many marine animals ✔️ Provide safe habitats for a huge diversity of flora and fauna ✔️ Feed over 200 million people who live nearby ✔️ Serve as a source of timber, fuel, and income ✔️ Store up to 10x more carbon than land-based forests ✔️ Mitigate the impacts of climate change When you think forests, think mangrove forests! #EcologyMatters #MangroveForests #CarbonCapture
