2. Geographical Indications and Coffee in Indonesia: Social and Ecological Implications of Premium Coffee Production in Aceh (in English) ☕ What is the relationship between Geographical Indication (GI) and sustainable coffee supply chain development in Indonesia? What are the benefits and challenges for small coffee farmers, and the responsibilities of consumers? Led by Emilie Vandecandelaere (FAO), Ari Susanti, PhD (Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM)) & Kei Otsuki (Faculty of Geosciences (Utrecht University)) 3. Food Transformations: Community Gardens, Urban Space, and Sustainable Futures (in English) 🏙️🌲 What would the ‘ideal’ future urban garden in the heart of Utrecht look like? In small groups, we will design, imagine, and draw (literally) our thoughts around the purposes of such a garden, its potential visitors, its role in the city and history, and much more. Led by Justyna Jakubiec (Utrecht University). 4. Young Future Food Movement (in English) 🎆 In May 2024, we kicked off the Young Future Food Movement. Are you a (former) UU student or young researcher who wants to become active in food-related questions both on campus and in the #Utrecht region, then join this workshop..! Meet like-minded people who are full of energy to make a change. We will discuss concrete ideas we can start working on tomorrow, such as creating a student-led community Kitchen. We look forward to getting to know you..! Aanmelden kan eenvoudig via onze website. | BLOG | Environmentalists must embrace the drama of belonging. Read the new #ClimateConfessions blogpost by Timothy Stacey : https://lnkd.in/gH86azfV "In the summer of 2022, 100 Dutch farmers parked their tractors outside of the Asylum Seekers’ Centre in Ter Apel, on the Netherlands’ north-eastern border with Germany to protest that they “no longer feel welcome” in the Netherlands. With right-ring populists being elected across the world, the action offers lessons that progressive environmentalists sorely need to hear...one reason that it landed so successfully is a failure on the part of liberal politicians and policymakers to take belonging seriously." #ClimateConfessions is a blog series in which UFS researcher Timothy Stacey reveals the “religious repertoires” associated with sustainability in various sectors. From the myths of great floods that dominate in Dutch politics to the rituals of reconnecting with other humans and the other-than-human found among activists, each month, Tim invites you into the repertoires that lurk beneath the surface, shaping sustainability in an otherwise secular world. #Ecology #Belonging #ClimateCrisis #ClimateChange #Liberalism #Transitions #Sustainability #ReligiousRepertoires #Research Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University

🌿We are thrilled to announce the winner of this year’s 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝! A huge congratulations to 𝑩𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒍: 𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒂 for their collaborative conservation research in Indonesia’s remote Banggai Archipelago 👏 In this biodiversity hotspot, species like the endangered Banggai Crow and Peleng Tarsier face severe threats from habitat loss and hunting. However, the indigenous Seasea community, with their profound traditional knowledge, has played a pivotal role in safeguarding these species. The project team made up of Annisa Triyanti (UU), Mochamad Indrawan (University of Indonesia), Universitas Trisakti , Hasanuddin University, Legal Aid Central Sulawesi, the Indigenous Seasea community and local wildlife conservation organisations developed innovative conservation strategies that integrate traditional wisdom with cutting-edge science. This initiative not only protects critical species but also sets a powerful example of culturally sensitive and sustainable conservation practices. “In this project we learn together with the Indigenous community of Seasea to create their sustainable future home. Their harmonious relationship with nature challenges the idea of hierarchy in societies, superiority of humans over non-humans, modernity over tradition and scientific knowledge over Indigenous knowledge, which is essential for creating lasting and sustainable conservation strategies,” says Annisa Triyanti, who accepted the award in the name of the collaboration which builds on a 30-year collaboration between the University of Indonesia and the Seasea community. We also want to extend our congratulations to the two runner-up projects of Ralph J.M. Temmink and Thijs Jeursen, which showcased innovative contributions to transdisciplinary sustainability research. Read more about all three projects here: https://lnkd.in/emBt2gBF
