Grieg Green is proud to collaborate with SEWA (Self Employed Women's Association) on an important project aimed at improving working conditions for women in the ship recycling industry in Bhavnagar, India. This project is funded by GRIEG FOUNDATION Recently, SEWA had the pleasure of hosting Walton Pantland, Director at IndustriALL Global Union who spent two days with SEWA. During his visit, Walton gained insights into SEWA's work in organising 3 million women in the informal economy. He met members involved in diamond polishing, home garment production, recycling old anchor ropes, and e-waste. In Bhavnagar, Walton observed the positive impact of our partnership with SEWA: - Improved personal protective equipment for e-waste workers - Umbrellas to provide shade from the sun - Tarpaulins to collect e-waste and prevent pollution - Training on handling hazardous materials found in e-waste - Ergonomic improvements, including daily access to a physiotherapist We admire SEWA's commitment to empowering women through their collective work. Let's get circular! ♻️ Together with Maritime CleanTech, we're making plans to give Norwegian shipyards a boost: a circular value chain for shipping—from construction to recycling. The project will ensure data-driven sustainability from the cradle to the grave for the world fleet. We aim to reduce waste and environmental impact while increasing responsible maritime parties' competitiveness. Vestland fylkeskommune (Vestland County) has already granted NOK 1.6 million to the project, and we're happy to add interested companies and organisations to the collaboration. "For Norwegian maritime companies, this is an opportunity to be at the forefront of future solutions and contribute to a greener and more circular global shipping industry," says Ada Martine Jakobsen, CEO of Maritime CleanTech. One of the tools, our "YardScore," will play a central role in evaluating and improving the sustainability of shipyard operations. "The lack of neutral and effective tools for assessing the sustainability of subcontractors and shipyards is challenging for the industry. This project will ensure such transparency while contributing to the development of a circular maritime economy with global impact," said our CEO, Pia Meling, as she launched the project to the industry at today’s Chasing Zero Conference. Thanks to Kongsberg Digital for having me on stage at today’s #Tomorrowshow in Oslo. 🎆 Key takeway - There are clear use cases for AI in the maritime industry: 🌎A global, complex chain of stakeholders, lots of data being manually exchanged, and 60.000 merchant ships sailing with poor connectivity and distributed decision power (to the Captain & crew) 🚢Shortage of seafarers, more advanced ships and a tsunami of new regulations and reporting leads to fatigue, stress and potential safety issues. 🍀Decarbonizarion challenge in a hard to abate sector. 💡Low degree of learnings across individual ships and in the logistics chain today, leading to inefficiancies. And to the question «will AI replace humans in the workplace?» Yes, and isn’t this a good thing when people can be relieved from from dirty, dull & dangerous work? In Grieg Green we work on making the ship recycling industry safer and more environmentally friendly. Ship dismantling is a manual, dangerous job, and only last week 6 workers lost their life at a Ship Recycling Facility in Bangladesh. 💔 Automation can protect people and make local ship recycling and circularity in countries with high labor cost more viable. ♻️ But robot cutting of a large ship is not like robot cutting your lawn. It will only be possible using AI as every ship is structurally different and contain many unknown dangers, like hazardous materials, confined spaces and explosive gases onboard. The access to, and training of, shipyard workers is also a big challenge. 👷♂️👷🏾 AI and machine learning is scalable and I hope I will live to see the changes that completely new ways of working will bring to shipping 🤩

Did you know that steel can be recycled indefinitely? Elin Beate Saltkjel, Head of HSEQ and Technical, recently contributed to the Roundtable for the Responsible Recycling of Metals (RRRM), an initiative focused on developing responsible scrap sourcing standards. While we have made strides in advancing ESG standards, challenges remain, especially in ensuring traceability and protecting vulnerable workers in informal supply chains. On the ground in Bhavnagar (India), SEWA Bharat is transforming the lives of women in the downstream ship recycling industry by improving safety, efficiency, and bargaining power. Through organising and providing essential training, SEWA empowers these workers to enhance their working conditions and strengthen their role in the entire supply chain. The project is funded by GRIEG FOUNDATION and supported by Grieg Green. As we push for a sustainable future, YardScore stands out as an important tool. By offering a clear, verified score, YardScore simplifies the selection of shipyards that meet strict ESG criteria, ensuring transparency and making a real impact where it matters most. https://lnkd.in/dgrcaZWH Our continuous goal is to turn ambition into action, ensuring every step in the recycling process benefits both people and the planet 🌍
