As one of over 500 public and private actors in Norway’s total defence, KONGSBERG plays a vital role in strengthening national and allied security. Through close cooperation with NATO partners, we provide advanced defence equipment and technology that support Norway’s commitments to the alliance. Our air defence systems, missiles, and remote weapon stations are in use by several NATO member nations, reinforcing collective security. Defence and security have also been elevated as key priorities within the EU. This message rang true as members of the KONGSBERG Retiree Association gathered for their annual Christmas celebration – a cherished tradition that unites former employees from across our business areas Kongsberg Maritime, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, Kongsberg Discovery and Kongsberg Digital. This gathering is about more than celebration. It is a reflection on community, shared history, and the lasting contributions of those who dedicated their careers to KONGSBERG. Their knowledge, experience, and commitment remain an essential part of who we are today. Most people can picture ambulances on the road – few imagine boats as ambulances. Yet Norway’s remote island communities rely on ambulance boats to perform a range of emergency services and ensure the same health care services to island dwellers as on the mainland. The Ambulance 2200 is described as a “mini hospital on the water”, with a design that minimises noise, vibrations, and vertical movements. The vessels are stationed along the western Norwegian coastline. They and their crews are tasked with everything from search and rescue to transportation of emergency personnel. The company that deploys these ambulance boats now relies on technology from our business area Kongsberg Maritime to provide the speed and manoeuvrability needed for job. The war in Ukraine has shown us that our enemies are not opposed to targeting critical infrastructure. The Russians have ruthlessly attacked dams, power plants, nuclear facilities, pipelines, ports, grain storage facilities, and other essential societal functions. Out in the North Sea, we have 8,800 km of gas pipelines. Norway has 93 different oil installations, and an extensive network of cables and communication systems. The threats are numerous, complex, and difficult to detect. After the Nord Stream sabotage, additional protective measures have been implemented at facilities related to the offshore industry. Is there an optimal way to transmit data through ice? This is the challenge at the heart of a ground-breaking collaboration project between SINTEF, University of Oslo, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Norsk Polarinstitutt • Norwegian Polar Institute, Mustad Autoline AS, and our business area Kongsberg Discovery. SubZeroSpace brings together each partner's collective talents, resources and networks to solve a challenge that impacts the effective communication of data worldwide, and beyond. Combining multiple innovative technologies introduces powerful new means of communication and enhances safety in icy environments. The goal is to find a way to communicate through ice using acoustic sensors to autonomously detect and avoid hazards near, and through, ice and water. The results could revolutionize how research is conducted in harsh and extreme conditions. However, ice represents challenges.
