What are the benefits of using recycled steel in construction? 🌍🚀 In Fenderen, Solheimsviken, Bergen, a pilot project is showcasing the impact of using beams made from recycled steel from Nordic Circles. The carbon emissions per beam are reduced by nearly 97% compared to traditional steel production.♻️ In this project, 4 of the hat-profile beams are made from upcycled steel sourced from ships and oil rigs. If all the beams were made from recycled steel, it would save between 133.7 and 262.6 tons of CO2e—equivalent to driving a car 21-41 times around the globe! 🌍🚗 This initiative is a major step toward a more sustainable construction industry, reducing carbon footprints and supporting the circular economy. Building a sustainable future with responsibility and innovation. ♻️ Read the full story in the link in the post below: #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #ConstructionInnovation #RecycledSteel #CircularConstruction Veidekke Veidekke Norge Norconsult Woodcon AS
How does plastic impact biodiversity and ecosystems? 🌱💧🐾 When we think of plastic pollution, images of littered beaches and floating debris in the ocean often come to mind. However, the true impact of plastic on biodiversity runs much deeper—and begins far earlier in the plastic lifecycle. In a report for the European Environment Agency, we explore the hidden biodiversity costs embedded within the plastic value chain — from resource extraction and production to use and waste management. The graphic below visualizes how biodiversity is affected at several stages of the plastic value chain ⛓️ As plastic production and consumption in Europe are projected to increase, the associated ecosystem pressures will only intensify. The path forward requires a fundamental shift in plastic management, focusing on smarter use, improved circularity, and renewable materials to help mitigate biodiversity impacts. 📄 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dcypxh-u ✏️The report has been authored by Norion in collaboration with VITO, Umweltbundesamt and VTT for the European Environment Agency. "Circular construction is not just about reusing materials—it's about rethinking the entire lifecycle of a building, from design to demolition, to ensure that the entire development process is sustainable, resource-efficient, and adds long-term value to the city and its inhabitants." Jan Thomas Odegard, Project lead Nordic Circular Construction🌟 Norway’s biggest city development project, Hovinbyen, is underway! 🌍 The principles of circular construction are central to the transformation of Hovinbyen. To shape the cities of the future, we must rethink how we plan, build, and manage our resources. Circular economy and place development are two core values in our projects. This made it especially exciting to participate in the breakfast meeting at ByLab Oslo- Hovinbyen with Hovinbyen Sirkulære Oslo (HSO), an initiative that follows the same circular principles. With 8,200 new homes and 35,000 workplaces planned in Hovinbyen, we are faced with an important question: How do we create a vibrant and sustainable city without ending up with monofunctional areas? The answer lies in collaboration across business, government, and knowledge communities. 📢 We heard exciting presentations from, among others: 🔹 Elin Schjenken Halvorsen (Hovinbyen Sirkulære Oslo) – Opportunities in the innovation district 🔹 Anja Fagereng Elind (Plan- og bygningsetaten i Oslo) – Zoning processes 🔹 Geir Haaversen (A-lab) – Architectural solutions 🔹 Thomas Holth (ØKERN SENTRUM ANS) – City life and center development 🔹 Erling Langeland (Oxer Eiendom) – Sustainable real estate development 🔹 Martin S. Lundby (Hafslund Oslo Celsio) – Energy and heating solutions 🔹 Lasse Aastorp Kilvær (Resirqel AS) – Circular building projects 🌟 Lasse Kilvær represents Resirqel, part of Nordic Circular Construction, our very own transition group focused on advancing sustainable and circular building practices🌟 What excites us especially is the ongoing work with the Construction City Cluster, one of Norway’s largest industry clusters for the construction, civil engineering, and real estate sectors. This cluster is unique in that it represents the entire value chain—ranging from large established corporations to medium-sized businesses, academia, public institutions, and startups. An engaging political debate was held with representatives from Green Party Norway, OSLO ARBEIDERPARTI, Oslo Venstre, and Oslo Høyre, led by Daniel Kjørberg Siraj (OBOS/HSO). It became clear that we need new processes and close collaboration to find the best solutions for the cities of the future. 💡 What do we take with us moving forward? Circular urban development requires holistic planning, innovative regulations, and interdisciplinary collaboration. We look forward to contributing to solutions that create greener, smarter, and more sustainable cities. A big thank you to HSO for an inspiring event! 📷 : Leander Falkenberg _________________________________ Jan Thomas Odegard Martin Hagen Cathrine Barth

🌟 How we can advance circular solutions in the construction sector? 🌟 Circular Build Forum 2025 – Shaping the Future of Sustainable Construction Last week Cathrine Barth and Jan Thomas Odegard participated in the Circular Build Forum 2025 in Denmark, leading a workshop on upscaling of innovative circular solutions in constructions in the Nordics. 📹 The session was broadcasted to all Nordic Circular Hotspot Partners; Check out the session hosted by Jan Thomas Odegard here: https://lnkd.in/dHzd2ic9 ✨ As a partner in Nordic Circular Hotspot you get access to relevant and important topics on a monthly basis, through our partner-meetups! 🙌 Collaborators in this months live broadcast included Gitte Haar, Søren Jensen, Troldtekt A/S, Tina Snedker Kristensen, and Anne-Mette Monnely. Key themes included: 🌟 material recycling 🌟 innovation 🌟 digitalization, 🌟 new business models The construction sector is now stating to put circular economy as a core priority. We gained valuable insights for our Nordic Circular Construction project from multiple stakeholders dedicated to scaling effective solutions across the Nordic region. Important points from the session: "Retrofit First" as a Strategy: In London, "retrofit first" has become the city´s policy on non-residential buildings. A construction moratorium as a tool to jump-start circular development in Denmark was explored. The challenge in several European countries isn’t the lack of buildings, materials, or spaces—it’s about reimagining how we use what we already have. (Gilli Hobbs) Preparing for New Reuse Regulations: The Danish construction industry is gearing up to meet new requirements for material reuse from demolition. Participants included some of the most ambitious players in the field: insurance companies, fund managers, developers, architects, and demolition contractors. Stricter Regulations on the Horizon: Both Denmark and the broader EU are introducing tighter regulations. This shift demands new knowledge and education to equip the industry for upcoming changes. It’s particularly interesting to see industry and educational institutions perspectives on what’s needed to train the workforce of tomorrow. Creativity in Material Innovation: There is remarkable creativity in developing new materials and finding innovative ways to repurpose existing ones. It’s also inspiring to see how far developers have come in leveraging data as a driving force for circular renovation—a space full of exciting developments. Commitment Beyond Cost: "We must do the right things, even if it costs," and it’s crucial that everyone contributes; otherwise, we will fail to comply with our climate and nature obligations. ________________________________ Thomas Kingo & Lone Lindgård Laursen Graves Simonsen Søren Meyer Bjarke Møller Region Hovedstaden Jeudan A/S Værdibyg Molio - Byggeriets Videnscenter Nordic Innovation Cathrine Barth Jan Thomas Odegard Natural State
