We have been looking into projects in #Brazil lately and it is interesting to see the financial differences depending on the projects's location, with Natal having some of the most attractive metrics for #greenhydrogen production #offgrid. Since Brazil announced a month ago its "low carbon" hydrogen definition to include up to 7 Kg of CO2 per Kg of hydrogen, more locations could qualify for hydrogen subsidies with sounding financial metrics, such as Florianapolis.   When comparing THE SAME solar + wind project configuration, to produce 500 kg of hydrogen per hour for 25 years, we see that Natal gives better project economics than Fortaleza for 100% offgrid #renewablehydrogen. But, the same solar and wind configuration in Florianapolis would not be enough to produce the desired hydrogen; ALTHOUGH when connected to the grid through a PPA (only when needed to fill in the intermittency), the desired hydrogen can be produced with attractive economics in exchange of 72% "low carbon" in this location.   With hydropower as the main source of electricity in Central and South Brazil, it's no surprise that Norwegian companies such as Norsk Hydro and Statkraft are strengthening their operations there. Let's watch this space as more Latinamerican countries evaluate their decarbonization options with local resources. All project simulations are performed in minutes with SOREN HYDROGEN - including the solar and wind sources. LCOH values are before subsidies.

There are dozens of relevant publications in the hydrogen sector, and you probably read many of them each year. Today, however, we want to give a special shout-out to an academic source:  OBS Business School from Barcelona. They’ve published a concise yet insightful article on the current state of hydrogen in Europe, titled "Natural selection in green hydrogen: Only the best will remain". The article is available in Spanish (unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an English version yet): https://lnkd.in/dkEX-niE Thanks of course to its author MarcosRuperez.com 🙌 for distilling these complex issues into such clear and straightforward language. #renewablehydrogen #greenhydrogen #energytransition #renewables

Yes Dr. Kerry-Ann Adamson ! 👏👏👏👏 Digital tools are a must if we want to accelerate renewable hydrogen. How much time it is spent from Concept, to Pre-FEED, to FEED ? How much time it is spent looking for Electrolysers OEM data ? ... with the Permits? ... with the Regulation? in each market ? ... the Subsidies and Incentives schemes, in each region and country ? If we keep doing the same things... ... we will definitely keep getting the same results. #energytransition #renewableydrogen

Hydrogen Leader with > 25 years+ experience / Global Strategic Advisor @Worley / former NED / Author / Energy Transition Advocate

On July 17, the European Court of Auditors published a report on the #renewablehydrogen sector in Europe focusing on the policy and the targets of 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to be produced within the bloc and 10 MTPA to be imported. The upshot of the report is that the targets are now unrealistic. Last August, we, Worley published the third in our series, From Ambition to Reality Report #FATR where we said the same thing but from a different perspective. By plotting out the current project development process, we can see it simply takes too long. In short, if we deliver infrastructure the way we always have, we will fail to reach net zero by mid-century. Right now, we have a choice. We can either wring our collective hands and wail and complain about things or we can change them. In addition to outlining the problem we also outlined five steps we think, through research and #collaboration, can reduce the time from inception to energisation of large mega #hydrogen projects. 1. #Collaboration - the continued silo approach of the industry is unhelpful. Even pitch decks where entrepreneurs slam the achievements of what has been done in an attempt to show that their tech would be so much better is unhelpful. We have a planet to decarbonise. We need every solution. 2. Broadening Options - I repeat, we need every solution. 3. The #Digital Accelerant - AI, Digital etc, are tools in a toolbox, and we need to employ them as standard and not called out as bolt-on options in projects. Digital tools will underpin so much of the #energytransition and we need to move faster on this. 4. Broadening Value—In an earlier post, I said that the energy transition wouldn't be cheap, and I was correctly pulled up to define cheap. We are conditioned to think of things in terms of costs, in pounds, shillings and pence, or dollars and cents, or yen or rupee etc and not their value. We need to move from cost to value, from economic to social-economic-environmental. I'm not saying that will be easy or quick. 5. #Standardisation - this is not anti #innovation but about providing the bedrock upon which innovation can flourish. We don't have time to go through a "natural", if there is such a thing, commodity market development cycle so we need to create the rules early. It is a weird, scary and worrying time right now. #peakchaos. Everything is so much more confrontational at the minute. Old ways of thinking and doing seem to be fighting back hard right now. To all of my friends, and frenemies in the #energytransition we need to work through this. Find common ground. Change things. Peace

Hydrogen requires bold moves at this stage. While some are hesitating because of the US elections (or the EU regulation), others are taking steps to make change happen. Read below the official press release from the California ARCHES H2 Hub, that will push the energy transition by adding 10 production sites, 60 hydrogen fueling stations for trucks and buses, by replacing diesel-powered cargo-handling equipment in Ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles & Oakland and by helping transition key power plants in both the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Northern California Power Agency. It is estimated that ARCHES DOE projects will result in $2.95 billion per year in decreased #healthcare costs due to improved air quality, particularly along transportation corridors. https://lnkd.in/gDP3vXJY Some would argue, over and over, that light vehicles should all use batteries, and they would be totally right when it comes to energy efficiency, but again what about the grid infrastructure? what about time? what about health and clean air in the meantime? #energytransition #renewablehydrogen #hydrogen #california #arches #doe #h2hub #renewables #greenhydrogen

🇪🇺 “The EU’s industrial policy on #renewablehydrogen – Legal framework has been mostly adopted – time for a reality check”, Special report 11/2024 by the European Court of Auditors 📗 https://lnkd.in/dmB497j9 ℹ️ The auditors assessed whether the EU is on track to achieve its 2030 #hydrogen targets, and examined how effective the European Commission has been at creating the right conditions for the emerging renewable and low-carbon hydrogen markets, given the significant implications of the transition for the future of key EU industries. 🔎 They looked at four member states in particular: 🇩🇪Germany, 🇪🇸Spain, 🇳🇱the Netherlands, and 🇵🇱Poland. 👀 OBSERVATIONS 🔹The Commission set unrealistic hydrogen production and import targets - the EU is not on track for achieving them 🔹The legal framework is mostly complete, but its overall impact on the market is as yet uncertain 🔹There are multiple EU funding sources for hydrogen projects, but no guarantee that they will be appropriate for developing an EU-wide market 🔹Insufficient coordination efforts by the Commission, both internally and with member states, but also with industry 🎯 RECOMMENDATIONS to the European Commission 1️⃣ following a reality check, make strategic choices on the way ahead without creating new strategic dependencies; 2️⃣ set out an EU roadmap and monitor progress; 3️⃣ obtain reliable national funding data and assess the appropriateness of EU funding arrangements accordingly; 4️⃣ monitor the permitting process in the member states; 5️⃣ take a clear decision on support and coordination actions with and for the
hydrogen industry. 🗣️ Replies by the European Commission 👉 https://lnkd.in/d_VBHcCb 👉 the results of this audit as useful to 🔸 support the implementation of the legal framework that has been created for hydrogen in recent years 🔸 assess any remaining challenges in the development of the different segments of a hydrogen ecosystem 🔸 reflect upon the actions that could be considered for developing further the hydrogen ecosystem BUT "too early to assess whether the necessary conditions created to support an emerging hydrogen market can be considered a success or not; several of the objectives to develop a hydrogen ecosystem are set after 2024, and it is therefore too early to evaluate whether these objectives have been achieved or not; a comprehensive assessment of whether the objective to build a European hydrogen ecosystem has been successfully achieved can be carried out only at a later stage"
