Today we were fortunate to be able to host 18 Year 12 STEM students from the Rotary International National Science and Technology Forum. We supported their experience with demonstrating the activities our staff engage in and what a typical day for an engineering consultant is like. Our technical team showcased our engineering disciplines, and they took a tour through our Geotechnical and Ecology Labs. A highlight was having them join us for our regular Friday Babbage Brunch. www.babbage.co.nz #STEM #EntineeringConsulting #Rotary

It’s the Babbage team's last day in office today before we go home to celebrate the holidays with our friends and family. As we send off 2024 we can recap on another year of fun and good times where our Social Committee managed to bring 20+ events to life for the Babbage team. It’s the first time we have ventured on a hiking trip, which was an overnight hike to Mt Pirongia. We brought back some of the traditional favourite events like Surf Trip to Whananaki, Fishing Trip on the Waitemata harbour and Cinema Night to watch another marvel movie. On the fundraising initiative we hosted a Pink Ribbon morning tea and Blue September breakfast. Sporting fixtures had us cheering on the Blackcaps, NZ warriors and European football final. Around town we ventured into some of our favourite bars for Friday drinks, attended a comedy festival and played Holey Moley Golf. The kids Xmas party was once again a success where the weather played its part and Mrs Claus handed out presents to all the Babbage kids. Our social committee has done an amazing job of creating an inviting social environment where all team members can join in the positive atmosphere and get to know their colleagues whilst taking part in some extracurricular activities they may not otherwise embark on! We’ve had tonnes of fun in 2024, and can’t wait to get see what 2025 brings!

Measuring Soil Infiltration to improve parameters for Stormflow Modelling for Different Land uses 🌿 At Babbage Consultants Limited, teams specialising in engineering, ecology, soil and environmental sciences take a multi-disciplinary approach to support our clients. From compliance monitoring and reporting or securing water supplies to solving complex stormwater challenges, we deliver tailored solutions across the country and abroad. Our Latest Project: As part of a comprehensive soil assessment, we conducted infiltration testing using double-ring infiltrometry. Complementing full soil descriptions including soil texture, structure, voids and coarse fragment and root distribution this helps us understand soil physical properties and assess the impact of land-use changes, such as removing grazing cattle to promote regeneration of forest and reforestation of pastoral land. Why This Matters: - Improved Soil Health: Reforestation enhances soil aeration, microbial biodiversity, and infiltration rates. - Runoff Management: Forested areas reduce peak storm flows due to increased interception and infiltration rates. This helps in mitigating risks like erosion and eutrophication. - Data-Driven Decisions: Our findings are aimed at supporting the refinement of Runoff Curve Numbers (CN), which are currently based on SCS 1986 U.S. standards. By incorporating locally relevant data and updated land-use parameters, we can improve hydrological storm flow models. This will lead to more effective stormwater management strategies and enhanced resource efficiency, benefiting communities and the environment. This project highlights how forest regeneration and reforestation influence soil properties, runoff and erosion dynamics and the effect of this on aquatic ecosystems. Last weekend, a team of Babbage’s soil experts made their way to Rotorua to take part in the 2024 annual Moana Oceania Soil Judging Competition. The participants spent three days in the field identifying, describing and classifying soils to then interpret their appropriate land uses. Participants were able to test their knowledge and competed against each other in groups and individually. Babbage Environmental Scientist and Soil Specialist, Judith van Dijk, was awarded First Place in the Individual competition for Working Professionals! We are incredibly proud of Judith and the rest of the Babbage Soil Experts Team that attended the competition. It was a great weekend of learning, networking, and putting their skills to the test! #Babbage #EnvironmentalScience #SoilSpecialists

Our Environmental Science & Engineering Team ... doing what they love to do!
🚜🌱 Update from the 2024 Moana Oceania Soil Judging Competition! Today, we visited a fascinating site in the southeast part of rural Rotorua, and what a geological treasure it is! The site revealed multiple buried soil horizons, each shaped by significant volcanic events. It’s incredible to see the impacts of local geology so clearly in the soil layers. Highlights included: •Whakatane eruption (~2000 years ago) •Taupo eruption (~181 A.D.) •Kaharoa eruption (~600 years ago) •Tarawera eruption (1886) The site truly offers a unique glimpse into the dynamic relationship between volcanic events and soil formation. Looking forward to sharing more insights as we continue to explore the science of soil here at the competition! Stay tuned for more updates, and feel free to reach out if you'd like to know more about specific findings or soil profiles! #SoilJudging #Rotorua #VolcanicSoils #Geology #Pedology #SoilScience #SoilLayers #SustainableSoilManagement #Agriculture #NZSSS #SSA #Babbage #SoilJudgingAusNZ

Babbage is proud to have a diverse team represented by many different cultures. A highlight of this, is the sharing and learning of each other’s cultures. Every year, our team members that share Indian roots proudly host a vibrant Diwali morning tea, a celebration that symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. It’s a wonderful celebration that brings us all together. Showcasing a stunning array of homemade traditional snacks, from crispy Potato Pakoras and Dhal Vada to flavourful Samosas and Masala Channa, the spread was once again a feast for both our eyes and our tummies! This year the team was introduced to the interactive dish; Pani Puri, a new crowd favourite! We were taught how to break open the crispy shells, fill with curried Aloo and Chick Peas, dip in the spiced Tamarind water and enjoy! As always, we indulged in sweet treats like Kaju Barfi and Sooji Halwa, and were treated to the classic homemade Mango Lassi. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Suman, Aditi, Amit, Anirudh, Aslam, Manoj, Mogie, Prabu, Sukhi and Vijay for their hard work in organising and cooking such a memorable feast! #Diwali2024

The new National Policy Statement and National Environmental Standards for greenhouse gases from industrial process heat require regional councils to consider the effects of greenhouse gas emissions on climate change. The industrial sector must adapt to these legislative changes to ensure that industrial process heat operations using fossil fuels meet compliance standards by 26 January 2025. Key changes: 👉 All consent applications must now include an emission plan detailing how greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will be mitigated. 👉 Fossil fuel-based sites emitting over 500 tCO2e annually must submit a consent application along with an emission plan. Sites emitting more than 2,000 tCO2e also need an independent review of their emission plan. How can Babbage help? We offer a range of services to support you in adapting to these changes: 👉 Audits to quantify current site emissions and identify reduction opportunities. 👉 Review and verify existing emission plans. 👉 Develop and prepare new emission plans. 👉 Determine whether your process heat system requires consent under the new regulations and, if so, obtain that consent. Reach out to one of our experts: Dr Stefan Harms, Senior Process Engineer, +64 27 654 0009 or stefan.harms@babbage.co.nz Richard Black, Planning Manager, +64 21 762 385 or richard.black@babbage.co.nz For additional details, read our brochure https://lnkd.in/dVrrnB-s https://www.babbage.co.nz/ #babbageconsultants #processengineering #planning #resourceconsent #ghg #emissionplans
