About us
Fair Food is Auckland’s original food rescue charity distributing surplus fresh food to over 70 community groups for free. We keep good food from going to landfill by collecting and hand sorting it with volunteers. We’re proudly rooted in West Auckland and are passionate about feeding our neighbours in a way that recognises their mana.

We love an excuse for hands-on craft at Daylight, and we couldn’t think of a better organisation to roll up our sleeves for. Every month Fair Food NZ collect approximately 50.7 tonnes of food destined for landfill from our biggest supermarkets. As this precious kai approaches its use-by date, volunteers sort, save and send it to New Zealander's in need So, we asked them to hold onto a bit of the left over packaging to create a campaign that showcases the incredible volume of food they rescue every day. A beautiful collage based poster set, packed with purpose for a group of absolute legends 🥫 🥑 🖼️ ❤️

NGOs are often encouraged to be “non-political” while also somehow creating systems change. We are on the frontlines of the impact of inequity, but when we talk honestly about solutions or barriers, it makes people uncomfortable. If you’re a leader, especially in the charity or public sector, I’d love to hear how you balance on this tightrope. If you’re sitting in discomfort about the Treaty Principles Bill, here is our Fair Food NZ submission to help guide your journey. Huge mihi to Vinetta Plummer who led our submission for Kai West and is a brilliant and thoughtful navigator for mana motuhake o te kai. https://lnkd.in/gfXyttTU

We get to observe a lot about a team when they come to volunteer with us. Every group we’ve had from Fonterra has been excellent: lots of initiative, humility, hard work, and a genuine team culture. Thank you to Rosy Herstell and Lorren Hawkins for gathering the team and the Fonterra ingredients to make Christmas custard and sponge cake for families who would otherwise miss out.

Today is International Volunteer Day, and we’re are delighted to showcase the great work Fair Food NZ does in West Auckland, and give a shout out to all of the 1000’s of people who volunteer their time to support Fair Food’s mahi. Every month, between 300-400 volunteers give their time and aroha at their kai tables and Conscious Kitchen to ensure rescued kai can become shared meals for those who need it most. Thanks so much to Michelle Blau and her tīma for sharing their story of giving, and for being such inspirational and hard-working humans 💛

This year, every one of our members has seen a rise in demand for their services, with 70% reporting this increase as significant. As Michelle Blau from Fair Food NZ so powerfully puts "We're in a growth industry but we shouldn't be. Every month we set a new record for how much need there is." Despite the challenges, our incredible members continue to rise to the occasion, working tirelessly to ensure surplus kai feeds our communities rather than going to waste. To learn more about this inspiring mahi in action and the difference it makes, check out this interview with Fair Food NZ linked below. It's a great listen.
Does your job make you smile like this before 7 in the morning? Our community is so incredible, and every day I get to witness the generosity of people who care for our friends and neighbours at the toughest time in their life. Thank you! Have a listen to Dale and Sonny on our awesome #foodrescue team: https://lnkd.in/g2nwxejb The crew at Woolworths New Zealand and our supermarket partners across Tāmaki Makaurau do not get nearly enough credit for the effort they put into making sure kai is not wasted. Fair Food NZ would not exist without them. Big ups to Gordon Harcourt for saying yes when I sheepishly asked if we could bring a RNZ journalist along for a pickup 🙏🏼https://lnkd.in/gNfE8gxj
