About us

Welcome to Fantail & Turtle. We’re a whānau owned, fiercely independent, award winning bar, eatery & functions venue, driven by core values of manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, & whanaungatanga. Located in the heart of Takapuna, Fantail & Turtle is the place for everyone, a destination suitable for all occasions, and able to host unforgettable events for up to 600 guests. Architecturally designed, featuring extensive gardens, all weather outdoor spaces, and flooded with afternoon sun. Whether you need a table for a few quiet ones or a private area to turn the music up & let your hair down, there are multiple spaces to choose from, and a dedicated Functions & Events Manager to work alongside you to ensure a flawless and stress-free experience. Just like our venue, our menu is designed to be shared with friends. Expect fresh & local craft beer, real ale & cider flowing from 15 taps, an on-site microbrewery, a wine list covering near and distant regions synonymous with varietal excellence, an extensive gin list enhanced with botanics fresh from our on site gardens, bespoke cocktails to sip late into the evening, and a modern seasonal menu, designed to share with a focus on showcasing sustainable & locally sourced produce. We operate a waste-free kitchen, using everything that doesn’t make it to the plate in stocks or sauces. Proteins are free range & house-butchered where possible, and our whole fish are sustainably line caught, broken down & dry cured on site. Herbs & greens are foraged or picked from our gardens, and food scraps are composted and returned to the soil. Dishes arrive as they’re ready, perfect for all day grazing. We’re fiercely independent, and stock only what we’re proud to serve. Every bottle and keg is hand picked, mostly from small & independent producers, made by people that we love, and chosen for our mahuhiri (guests), to enjoy with us. Our team are industry leading & regularly recognised amongst the best, and we can’t wait to show you why.

  • After taking home the top prize in the inaugural event this year, we've been given the privilege of hosting the 2025 Top 50 NZ Gastropubs Awards 🎉 We've still buzzing from the win, but possibly even more excited at the idea of passing the torch with an unforgettable event at ours. We're planning to make it one to remember 🥳 A little birdy told us he might be flittering about on the judging panel too.. 😉 https://lnkd.in/gnNaS2tJ

Fingers crossed for tomorrow night! It’s humbling that our business has won awards judged by our customers (Outstanding Local Establishment), and by independent hospitality experts (Supreme Winner NZs Best Gastropub). But being a finalist for an award judged by confidential surveys of our staff…… that makes me feel incredibly proud of our amazing leaders. We have always seen our biggest success as creating a workplace environment where young people turn up feeling not only safe and respected, but excited about working at Fantail & Turtle Best Places to Work

  • Best Places to Work Awards 2024 📣 Finalist - Small Business Finalist - Community & Regional Impact Spotlight We've been up for our fair share of awards over the years, but this is the one we would take straight to the pool room, and that our mums would be most proud of us for. We start each shift with the goal to provide manaaki you can feel, and the simple truth we subscribe to is that our team can't look after our manuhiri at their best unless they're cared for by us, first. Our team are the heart & soul of the venue, we're incredibly proud of the experience they provide day in and day out, and so lucky to work alongside such a passionate, kind, caring, clever, resilient, optimistic & genuinely fun to be around group of people. While we still think we can do better, and probably always will, we'll take this as a nod we're getting at least a few things right in our intention to prioritise our people and concentrate on culture. The elephant in the room is that this industry doesn't have the strongest reputation for how it can treat the people working in it, and unfortunately we've seen enough, heard enough, and been around long enough to know that's not undeserved. As the only hospitality business shortlisted (& now a finalist), hopefully we can encourage other venues that genuinely put their people first to put their hands up too. We know you're out there, and if we're really lucky, maybe we can contribute a small part in starting to change that narrative. He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata! What is the most important thing in this world? It is people, it is people, it is people. p.s this one's for you, turtle.
