  • Free shuttles from Foxton Beach Centre help locals access health services Two new shuttle buses will help reduce feelings of isolation for residents of towns like Shannon, Foxton Beach, and Himatangi. The shuttles are run by the Foxton Beach Community Centre, which currently has three shuttles running, and two more on the way. President of the community centre Lyal Brenton said they are a vital tool in helping prevent feelings of loneliness or being cut off from the community.Shuttles are completely free to use and provide people in isolated Horowhenua towns with transportation to Foxton, Levin, and Palmerston North for health and wellbeing purposes, such as medical appointments, hairdressing appointments, and more. The centre fundraised for their fourth vehicle, a Kia Seltos, through their op shop and by running weekly garage sales, and the fifth, a Toyota Rav 4 hybrid, has been donated to them by the Horowhenua New Zealand Trust. Brenton said once they get the fifth shuttle it will be mainly used for transporting people to Foxton and back, as the other shuttles can be gone for some time when taking people further away. https://lnkd.in/gY27E9q5

  • Horowhenua New Zealand Trust invests $1.6m in local healthcare services The Horowhenua New Zealand Trust has committed over $1.6 million to enhance healthcare access and services for the district through a series of grants and investments. One of the healthcare services the trust is investing in is the Health & Wellbeing Hub. In October, the trust said it would make a $1.5m investment into the development of the Horowhenua Health & Wellbeing Hub, currently under construction in Durham St in Levin. The development is being undertaken by Horowhenua Developments Limited and will provide a range of general practice, pharmacy, radiology and related healthcare services. The trust is also investing in community distributions supporting healthcare access and support. As part of its ongoing commitment to community wellbeing, the trust has awarded three community grants this month. Among these, a collective grant of $100,000 has been allocated to the Horowhenua Health Shuttle Trust and the Foxton Beach Community Trust. This funding will enable the purchase of two specialised vehicles to expand their transport fleets, providing critical transportation services for residents travelling to Palmerston North Hospital and local health facilities throughout the region. read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/gpDHFRYT

  • The Horowhenua New Zealand Trust is contributing $1.6 million to the district’s health services, led by investment in Levin’s new health centre. About $1.5m would be committed to the Horowhenua Health Wellbeing Hub project under construction on Durham St, trust chairperson Antony Young announced on Wednesday. The project was being driven by Horowhenua Developments Ltd, a trust group subsidiary, and would provide a range of general practice, pharmacy, radiology and related healthcare services. Three community grants have also been awarded, all focused on healthcare access and support. A collective grant of $100,000 has been allocated to the Horowhenua Health Shuttle Trust and the Foxton Beach Community Trust to buy two specialised vehicles that will expand their transport fleets. A $25,000 grant would go towards a dedicated first aid room being built at the Horowhenua Events Centre in Levin. Young said a recent Horowhenua District Council survey found access to healthcare was residents’ chief concern. “With nearly 8500 residents not registered with a GP in [the] district, and with hospital services and specialist care 50km away in Palmerston North for our residents, the trust has made healthcare a priority for support.” The trust was established to support the community through economic development activities and social enterprises. Young said the grants were made possible with dividends from commercial activities of the trust’s subsidiaries. “We’ve only been able to make these contributions because of The Horowhenua Company Ltd team, Horowhenua District Council, and the mahi of others in the community. “I would also like to acknowledge the amazing efforts of past and present trustees over the last six years who enabled us to get to this point.” The funding announcements were made on the back of a $50,000 donation to the Palmerston North Hospital Foundation in 2022 that went towards the build of the children’s dedicated emergency department facility. That facility was completed in October. https://lnkd.in/gzSsRRJf

One of my roles that I get a lot of satisfaction from is being a board member of Business Kapiti Horowhenua Inc. BKH operates the Electra Business & Innovation Awards, the Customer Engagement Award (formerly Top Shop) and the Business Hall of Fame. It's hugely inspiring to see local businesses, big and small, established and new share their stories. Almost without exception, the winners are humble, and wouldn't fit into anyone's typical idea of an entrepreneur. Just business owners going about doing what they do. Almost all would prefer to avoid the limelight (most of them aren't even usually on LinkedIn!) But becoming a finalist is a big achievement for them and our community, and why I love being involved in BKH. Here are some pics of last year's winners. Overall 2023 Business of the Year, Mills Albert, an exceptional Paraparaumu based drainage, construction and contracting business; The Greenery an innovative landscaping and nursery business in the Horowhenua on State Highway 1; and Manakau Market a fun spot with superb burgers, pizza and food grocer. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE AWARDS we are hosting the 2024 launch event at the exquisite Māoriland venue in Otaki on Wed evening 17 April. It's FREE and a great opportunity to know more about these awards, what's involved to enter, and to share a drink with some fellow business owners. Maybe you might be enticed to enter the awards this time or possibly in the future? While it's free, you will need a ticket so book online (link below.) WHY ENTER THE ELECTRA BUSINESS AND INNOVATION AWARDS? It's about putting your business out there. The awards are a smart way to help market what you do. Finalists are featured in our local press the Horowhenua Chronicle and Kapiti News thanks to generous support of New Zealand Media & Entertainment (NZME), and the buzz and digital marketing generated by our incredible awards team. But more importantly, it's about recognition for your customers and team. Thanks to Horowhenua District Council and Kāpiti Coast District Council it is free for local businesses to enter. The invite to the launch event and link to the awards website are included in the comments below... Thanks to our incredible support team and sponsors who make these awards as great as they are.
