I’m happy to share that I’ve obtained a new certification: International Volunteer Service from International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ)! Volunteering at ReFood in Lisbon, Portugal was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity as I immersed myself in the Portuguese culture, mitigating food waste and insecurity among Portuguese citizens, Ukrainian refugees, and North African refugees.

This summer I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Tanzania, Zanzibar to work alongside International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) as part of the Laidlaw Foundation Scholarship. In the 6 weeks of volunteering I was able to take part in Coastal and Marine conservation and work closely with local organisations and charities such as Under The Wave. This opportunity allowed me to explore sustainable solutions including dolphin research where 6 hours a week were spent researching the levels of unsustainable tourism including, dolphins being chased and ran over by boats, this is ongoing research that is being collated and analysed to be sent of to the Tanzanian government. As well as this we undertook work in beach clean ups with the clearing of plastics and waste from beaches and coral reefs through snorkelling and diving. The team have also been building new coral farms to help with the reduction in coral due to bleaching. We also undertook weekly work on planting new mangroves in the coastal regions to provide the islands with more protection from flooding and increased sea level. This project involves planting nearly 1000 mangrove seeds every week and has been a very successful project so far. We worked closely with Chako and Ozti who are local charities that create products from plastic and glass waste found on the island. It is a way of coping with the large levels of waste found on the island from tourists as there is no rules and regulation with waste collection and removal and also provide jobs for local women who are often expected to stay at home. As well as this, a group of 5 were lucky enough to be in charge of creating a system to use local people and the communities to clean up the villages, while providing them with a stable income. In order to achieve this funding, we sent out emails and messages to 20-30 hotels in the surrounding region to request funding from them. We worked with local women in seaweed farms and helped the local chief of Matemwe and his team in building a sea cucumber farm to help increase the business for local fishermen without the exploitation of sea animals. We had daily lessons with the village children on waste and the understanding of non decomposable waste as plastics are a relatively new issue. This experience allowed me to gain such an improved understanding of the approaches required to make global change. The community are at the heart of each project and without their approval and understanding, no sustainable project will be successful.

🌏 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝘆 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗹! 🇳🇵 I’m grateful to be volunteering in #Kathmandu with International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) alongside the Himshikhara Socio Cultural Society (#HISCUS). HISCUS works to preserve Nepali culture and support underserved communities through peacebuilding, education, and community development. Here’s a look at my first two weeks: 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 1️⃣: 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑽𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑨𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 One of the highlights has been meeting fellow volunteers from many different countries. Exchanging experiences and learning about their #cultures has added so much to this journey and made the experience even more enriching. 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇦🇺🇹🇼🇯🇵🇰🇷🇸🇰🇵🇰 𝑽𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏 𝑺𝒐𝒂𝒑-𝑴𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 I assisted in a two-day soap-making program for #women at a local center. The goal was to promote #skills development and empowerment— we taught women to make soap using accessible materials, providing them with practical skills to support themselves and their families. 🧼 𝑭𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝑽𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒍𝒖𝒎/𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝑨𝒓𝒆𝒂 During a field visit, I saw firsthand the living conditions in a slum area, where families face many daily challenges. Seeing their #resilience in the face of these conditions was a strong reminder of why support is so important. 🏠 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 2️⃣: 𝑫𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒂𝒍𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑭𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍 𝑺𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 With Dashain, Nepal’s biggest #festival, around the corner, my team leader and I developed donation proposals to secure clothing for children in the slum area. The goal is to make sure they have new clothes to celebrate this festive season, bringing some joy to their lives. 👕👚 𝑴𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 & 𝑷𝒔𝒚𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 As a trainee counsellor, I created psychoeducational activities focused on emotional well-being for women and children. Through discussions and interactive exercises, we aimed to raise awareness around mental health—a topic essential to personal and #community #growth. 🧠🧩 The first half of this experience has been humbling and deeply inspiring, showing me the power of community efforts to make a difference. Looking forward to sharing more soon! 🎉 #volunteer #ivhq #nepal #community

Starting my career as a solicitor at Attwells Solicitors in our Colchester branch | Gaining experience across a range of legal practices | Building relationships in the legal community.

Six months ago, I packed my bags (and a lot of bug spray) and headed to the beautiful island of Nosy Komba in Madagascar—a journey that truly showed me the importance of community and gratitude. Through partnerships with International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) and MRCI, I contributed to forest and turtle conservation efforts and had the privilege of teaching English to the local community. Engaging with the wonderful people of Nosy Komba not only allowed me to share what I could, but also to learn so much in return. Between dodging curious lemurs and learning to cook over open flames, I discovered how small actions can create lasting connections and how vital it is to be there for others. 🙉 🔥 This experience really showed me the benefits of stepping outside your comfort zone. It’s not just about exploring new places—it’s about immersing yourself in different cultures, gaining fresh perspectives, and challenging yourself in ways you never imagined. So, for anyone looking for a sign to book that flight, I say do it! ✈ 🏝

Lessons in Leadership from South Africa 🇿🇦 Last month, I had the privilege of volunteering on a teaching project in South Africa with International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ). It was an eye-opening experience that strengthened my adaptability, communication, and leadership skills. As Nelson Mandela said: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of their skin, or their background, or their religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love.” This experience taught me that leadership is about fostering understanding, breaking down barriers, and inspiring others to work together. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow alongside such incredible people. I’m grateful for the opportunity and the lessons I’ll carry forward in both my personal and professional life.
