Updates

  • We work with several community housing providers across the country, including the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust. In partnership with the trust, JTB Architects have recently completed these six new homes in Nelson, addressing the pressing need for quality, affordable housing in the region. These homes were designed with a strong emphasis on affordability, sustainability, and functionality, creating a warm and welcoming environment for families. Additional projects with the trust are set to be completed over the next couple of years, expanding the availability of affordable housing in the Nelson-Tasman area and reflecting our broader commitment to community housing projects and social impact nationwide.

Six families on low incomes will soon move into our new rental homes in Tōtara St, Nelson, which were blessed at an opening celebration today. The homes are a mix of two, three and four bedrooms and are looking fantastic - the families are due to move in mid-November and are very excited about it. Here are some photos from today, of Nelson Mayor Nick Smith and our board chair Andrew Wilson planting a tree; our director Carrie Mozena outside the homes; and guests mingling. • On a compact 305m² site in Auckland, these thoughtfully designed townhouses were developed in close collaboration with the developer Blackbird Projects Ltd. Each unit is thoughtfully planned to balance privacy, context, and light. The mirrored floor plans optimise space usage, while lofted ceilings define distinct living and working areas. Central double-height voids and strategically placed skylights fill interiors with natural light, contributing to a spacious, open atmosphere.

  • We're excited to be involved with Natureland Nelson’s new capuchin monkey enclosure, designed to enhance both habitat and visitor experience. Stage I is well underway, with the perimeter fence and mound removed, and the moat dug. Stage II will focus on building the capuchins' new den. The design includes an extended outdoor area, a natural moat, a covered den, and a back-of-house space, plus a redeveloped picnic area. Set in the heart of NZ’s wine country at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT), this project brings together modern design, local materials, and sustainability, celebrating the region’s rich viticulture. The Wine Centre is a collaborative hub for education, science, and winemaking and forms the centre point to the larger masterplan comprising the award-winning Bragato Research Institute, and the recently completed Experimental Future Vineyard, a state-of-the-art research facility with an aim to improve environmental outcomes during wine grape production. • Golden Bay’s Port Tarakohe is set to get a new two-storey facility and office building. JTB is excited to be a part of this project that will enhance both the functionality and aesthetic of the historic port. The building has been designed to seamlessly integrate with the surrounding limestone cliffs and incorporates vertical battens that reflect the local whenua and moana. Drawing inspiration from traditional Māori pā sites, the building’s elevated screens service as modern palisades, offering both protection and a powerful symbolic presence overlooking the coast. We have worked closely with local artist Robin Slow and Manawhenua ki Mohua to integrate local narratives into the building’s design. The patterns are influenced by the honu (turtle) motif from the Anaweka waka, discovered on the Kahurangi coast in 2012. This new structure aims to provide north-facing coastal views and a strong connection with the outdoor environment, serving as a modern addition to the historical Port Tarakohe setting. We are working with Coman Construction on this design and build project for Tasman District Council - Te Kaunihera o te tai o Aorere.
