Six families on low incomes will soon move into our new rental homes in Tōtara St, Nelson, which were blessed at an opening celebration today. The homes are a mix of two, three and four bedrooms and are looking fantastic - the families are due to move in mid-November and are very excited about it. Here are some photos from today, of Nelson Mayor Nick Smith and our board chair Andrew Wilson planting a tree; our director Carrie Mozena outside the homes; and guests mingling. Providing affordable, healthy homes for people on low incomes
About us
We provide affordable, healthy homes for people on low incomes. We have 55 rental homes in Nelson-Tasman and we plan to develop another 45 homes in the next 3 years. Our homes make a huge difference in people's lives, by providing: * A warm, dry environment to live in, which improves people's health and well-being. * A secure place to live long-term, which gives people stability and peace of mind. * Rents that are affordable. * Energy-efficient homes that cost less to heat and cool. All these benefit the community as a whole too, by reducing respiratory illnesses and demand on health services, supporting workers and increasing community resilience and cohesion.

Unfortunately Nelson Tasman remains one of the least affordable regions in the country for housing, as this Stuff article explains. Not only are house prices high here, but incomes low - which makes it hard to buy a house. The same applies to rental homes - the average rent in Nelson Tasman accounts for a quarter of the average local household income. This is why there is such a need for more quality affordable rental homes in our region. https://lnkd.in/d-Fzt6G6

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our 20th birthday celebration this week. It was great to see such a wide variety of people there - tenants, funders, supporters, partners, past and current staff and trustees, and representatives from community organisations and businesses we work with. We couldn't have achieved what we've achieved over the past 20 years without the support and input from all these people! Great to have a visit from Community Housing Aotearoa Ngā Wharerau o Aotearoa recently and have a chance to show them our latest project, which is currently being built - six affordable rental homes in Totara St, Nelson.
We were in Nelson recently catching up with Carrie Mozena at Nelson Tasman Housing Trust and Susan Jenkins at Abbeyfield NZ. The Trust has built an impressive portfolio of community housing across the district over the past two decades. We look forward to celebrating the opening of their new 2,3 and 4 bdrm home development at Totara Street which is on target to welcome new residents later this year. We also visited Abbeyfield's Mata Close House in Tahananui (photo L-R Barry Mills, Susan Jenkins, David Zussman). The building was clearly designed and constructed with residents needs in mind particularly accessibility, mobility, affordability and wellbeing. Thanks again for the warm and welcoming hospitality Whakatū.

This is a great interview explaining the important role that community housing providers such as ourselves have in building affordable, healthy homes for people in need.
Great interview on RNZ yesterday about last week's housing announcements. Greg Foster, Social Housing National Director, and Hope Simonsen, General Manager for Emerge Aotearoa Housing Trust talked to Kathryn Ryan about community housing and the benefits of local based solutions.
