What a weekend we have had. Development Manager Grant Thomas travelled to the UK this week with our beautiful apartments at 66 Oxford Terrace Christchurch a finalist in the International Structural Awards - and he is bringing home the win. The award recognises the pioneering retrofit approach to save a seismically damaged building. We have always supported sustainability and giving new life to a building wherever this is possible. Oxford Terrace is testament to what can be achieved when all partners collaborate towards this goal. Our thanks and congratulations to the entire project team but particularly to Structure Design Ltd and Phoenix Consulting Ltd.

My cup is very full after spending last Thursday with this amazing rōpū 💚 Three years after being created, the SESOC Sustainability Task Force gathered in Ōtautahi Christchurch for an afternoon of whanaungatanga 🤝 and strategy. We're a diverse bunch, with consulting structural engineers, contractors, academics, central government and suppliers all bringing their whakaaro 🧠 to the table! We are passionate to bring about change for good in the built environment, and ready to have a laugh together along the way. With Charlotte Toma at the helm, we have achieved some pretty amazing stuff for the structural engineering community in Aotearoa - most recently with the release of the SESOC Top Tips for Low Carbon Design guide which I am super proud of. WOW!!!!!! This was absolutely epic!!! Great to visit Sam Stubbs and check out Simplicity Living biggest project yet - Te Reiputa - with 297 new one and two-bedroom apartments in Mt Wellington, Auckland. It was great to catch up with Mayor Wayne Brown checking out the operation. He was checking out some stairs that Sam’s team build for under 3k compared to over $263000 for the Milford stairs!! It’s not often that a visit to a building site sparks joy, but seeing what Sam Stubbs and the team at Simplicity Living have accomplished down in Mt Wellington deserves high praise. They have built a terrific business model that takes Kiwisaver and Superannuation funds and uses that to construct profitable, build-to-rent apartments. Not only are they very high quality, but they’re incredibly cost effective. Shane Brealey and his team have developed a form of construction that’s more like an assembly line. It’s streamlined the process using quality sacrificial boxing and faster erect systems with temporary supports for the reinforcing making it very quick to assemble and pour the concrete. Then they take an unbelievably systematic approach to the fit out and the services. They’ve got long term relationships with subcontractors and regular staff on site. All this means that they can deliver better standards of apartments, bigger and higher stud height; at 5-10% below market rates; while delivering great returns for their investors. They are absolutely living and breathing the ‘Better, Faster, Cheaper’ motto. It’s highly innovative stuff.
