📚 Give Me A Book Foundation is the non-stock and non-profit corporation behind Filipino Leveled Books. Today, 9 out of 10 Filipino children struggle to read and understand a short text even by the age of 10. To tackle the Philippine education crisis and address learning poverty, we have created books that develop independent reading skills for underserved Filipino schoolchildren. Our vision is of a nation of literate Filipinos who learn in early childhood to read and comprehend written Filipino. Why Filipino? Studies have shown that mother language instruction increases the likelihood of children succeeding in school and that it lays the cognitive and linguistic foundation for learning additional languages. Research shows that reading culturally relevant books improves students' school performance, specifically in reading comprehension. Filipino Leveled Books show the daily lives and experiences of Filipino children. This is our response to the alarming results that show the Philippines at the bottom of reading comprehension rankings. Children need books at their reading level when they are learning how to read. However, teachers and students in the Philippines never had leveled books in Filipino because they didn’t exist. Until now. Our titles are organized by levels to match reading behaviors and skills to a specific reading stage. Our leveled books allow Filipino children to build foundational literacy skills and make progress from one level to the next. Through generous funding and donations, we have donated over 43,000 books, changing the lives of more than 77,000 students after just 10 weeks with Filipino Leveled Books. We did it! 🎉 After months of preparation, our foundation successfully held our first-ever event at Padre Burgos Elementary School in Pasay City! 📚✨ Thanks to our amazing sponsors and dedicated volunteers, we had a wonderful morning reading **Filipino Leveled Books®** to first graders. The joy on their faces as they engaged in an arts and crafts activity based on the stories was truly heartwarming. 💖 This event is part of our **BaSa** or **Bayanihan** campaign, aimed at raising awareness about our mission to create Filipino Leveled Books® that teach children how to read. “Bayanihan” embodies the spirit of community coming together to achieve a common goal. 🤝 A huge thank you to **Tiffany Colayco** for leading this initiative, and to the seven other volunteers who poured their time and energy into making this day unforgettable for the children and sponsors alike. 🙌 Special thanks to Padre Burgos Elementary School for all the advance preparation! 👧🏽 👦🏽 As National Children's Month comes to a close in the Philippines, we look back on Give Me A Book Foundation's first Balikbayan Saturday. GMBF's founder and president, Maria Victoria (Chona) Lagoutte, along with board members and the team of volunteers led by Tiffany Colayco, organized the foundation's first face-to-face fundraising event to support the creation and distribution of culturally relevant Filipino Leveled Books to students and teachers who most need them. 🏫 33 students of the Padre Burgos Elementary School participated in GMBF's Bayanihan Saturday (BaSa) last November 23. The children practiced reading and did arts and crafts with their volunteer-partners, in a morning filled with joyful learning. 🗓️ 33 days left until we welcome the new year. 🎁 As we make our gift lists this holiday season, let's remember that every single contribution of time and resources towards literacy and education creates a difference in children's lives and our country's future. The traditional practice of neighbors helping one another to move (a) house reflects the deeply rooted cultural belief in solidarity and shared responsibility, especially in times of need. Promoting Multilingual Education 9-10 September 2024 The global celebration of yesterday's International Literacy Day will be held in Yaoundé, Cameroon with UNESCO's global conference and awards ceremony for International Literacy Prizes. Educators and education policymakers will address issues related to literacy in multilingual contexts. Can children in your country read? 📖 It is difficult to imagine that children who are diligently going to school are still unable to read and understand simple texts. And yet the numbers are there. The learning poverty indicator was launched by The World Bank and UNESCO Institute for Statistics in 2019 in their alarming report on the global learning crisis.
