#H2020SUSTENANCE recommends: 👇 "A citizen-centred approach to renewable local energy system innovation" by Frans Coenen|University of Twente "(...) How do we achieve citizen-centred energy system changes? One key aspect of innovative solutions is their adaptation and diffusion. Energy systems won’t transition overnight into 100% sustainable systems. The vision of creating communities free from carbon emissions requires a significant shift in our current energy systems, and changes in policies, consumer behaviour, and business models. A citizen-centred approach means the transition is inherently a local socio-technical system innovation. To reach the adaptation and diffusion of innovative solutions in a socio-technical system, not only technical barriers like the maturity of the technology but also the social part forms barriers to implementation, for instance, because of regulation, costs and social acceptance." On the 5th of November the final event of EU-India RE-EMPOWERED project and its sister EU-India SUSTENANCE H2020 project, was organized in the framework of #MEDPOWER24 conference that was held in Athens from 3rd to 6th of November! The session entitled ‘EU-India collaboration for smarter energy systems: RE-EMPOWERED and SUSTENANCE projects’ was joined by more than 30 people coming from academia, system operators (DSO (Διαχειριστής Ελληνικού Δικτύου Διανομής Ηλεκτρικής Ενέργειας Α.Ε. HEDNO S.A. ) and TSO(IPTO-Independent Power Transmission Operator )), the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Waste and Water (RAEWW), research centers, etc. Highlights 🌟 ✅The session started with opening remarks from the president of CIGRE Konstantin O. PAPAILIOU who is member of RE-EMPOWERED’s advisory board, Bikash Pal from partner Imperial College London and Petros Markopoulos from Δίκτυο ΔΑΦΝΗ / DAFNI Network, representing the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat. ✅In the main part, the results from the two projects were presented. In particular, the development of ecoMicrogrid, ecoEMS, ecoPlatform, ecoCommunity tools were elaborated by Athanasios Vasilakis and George Milionis from ICCS - NTUA and Ayşegül Kahramanül Kahraman from DTU - Technical University of Denmark. Dr Srinivas Bhaskar from IIT Bhubaneswar provided an overview of the Keonjhar microgrid activities in a video presentation. ✅Footage from the 2 videos for Indian and EU demosites were projected, highlighting the project results. ✅SUSTENANCE H2020 project coordinator Birgitte Bak-Jensen from Aalborg University, presented the activities of the project and their application in the 6 project demosites. ✅Krzysztof Rafal from the Polish Academy of Sciences talked about the industrial implementation of energy management systems in local communities. ✅Despina Koukoula from Διαχειριστής Ελληνικού Δικτύου Διανομής Ηλεκτρικής Ενέργειας Α.Ε. HEDNO S.A. and member of the International Advisory Board shared her views on the project results highlighting their importance from an industrial point of view. At the end of the session a lively discussion took place in which the participants exchanged views on issues faced in other isolated power systems (non-EU) similar to the RE-EMPOWERED demo sites and how these can be resolved in a replicable manner.  The project will be completed by the end of this year!
