Cyber Monday is here - a day filled with deals, deliveries, and unfortunately, opportunities for scammers. At jtendo, we want to remind everyone to stay vigilant, especially with the rise of SMS-based scams pretending to be from postal or courier services. Here’s a common scenario: 📩 You receive a text message stating that your package requires a small fee for delivery or customs clearance. 🔗 The message includes a link to pay the fee. 💳 If you click on it, you might end up on a fake website where you could unknowingly provide your credit card details to cybercriminals. Protect Yourself: 1️⃣ Verify Before You Click: Use the official website or app of the courier service to check the status of your package. 2️⃣ Beware of Urgency: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to push you into acting without thinking. 3️⃣ Look for Red Flags: Spelling mistakes, unfamiliar senders, or suspicious links are clear signs of fraud. 4️⃣ Report Suspicious Messages: Notify your mobile operator or postal service about any scam attempts. Instead of inspecting protocols in isolation, this approach examines the interactions between them to detect anomalies, inconsistencies, or malicious activities that might slip through standard protocol-specific checks. 🚀 Why is Cross-Protocol Checking Important? Attackers often exploit the gaps between protocols, using one protocol to manipulate or gain unauthorized access through another. By implementing cross-protocol checks, telecom operators can: 1. Detect Sophisticated Attacks: Identify complex threats that use multiple protocols to bypass security measures. 2. Ensure Consistent Subscriber Data: Verify that subscriber information remains consistent across protocols, preventing fraud and impersonation. 3. Maintain Network Integrity: Protect against denial-of-service attacks that can disrupt services. 📱 Real-World Examples of Cross-Protocol Checks 1. Subscriber Identity Verification Across Protocols: Scenario: A user authenticates via the Diameter protocol in a 4G network. Later, there's signaling activity associated with the same user over the SIP protocol for #VoLTE services. Cross-Protocol Check: The firewall cross-references the user's identity across Diameter and SIP. If inconsistencies are found, it flags potential impersonation or session hijacking attempts. 2. Session State Correlation Between GTP and Diameter: Scenario: A data session is established over the GTP protocol, but corresponding accounting messages over Diameter do not match the session parameters. Cross-Protocol Check: By correlating #GTP and Diameter messages, the firewall can detect discrepancies indicating possible billing fraud. 3. Location Consistency Monitoring: Scenario: A user's location update in the #SS7 network shows they're in one country, but subsequent Diameter messages suggest a different location. Cross-Protocol Check: The firewall compares location data across protocols. Mismatches may reveal SIM box fraud or unauthorized roaming, triggering security measures. 🔒 Benefits of Cross-Protocol Checking 1. Enhanced Security Posture: Provides a holistic view of network signaling, uncovering threats that single-protocol analysis might miss. 2. Reduced False Positives: By validating events across multiple protocols, the firewall can more accurately distinguish between legitimate anomalies and security threats. 3. Regulatory Compliance: Helps meet security standards and regulations by ensuring comprehensive protection of signaling networks. As telecom networks become more complex, so do the threats they face.
