What are the ripple effects and implications of this industry, which capitalizes on stranded energy sources, and what are the consequences for the surrounding communities and the environment? DIRTY COIN is a thought-provoking documentary directed by Alana Mediavilla that delves into the controversial world of Bitcoin mining. The film challenges conventional wisdom about the environmental impact of Bitcoin and explores how this emerging technology could drive significant improvements in our energy infrastructure. Through a combination of expert interviews, on-the-ground investigations, and compelling narratives, DIRTY COIN seeks to reshape the dialogue around Bitcoin data centers and their capacity to contribute positively to global energy solutions. This interview didn’t make the final cut of the film, but it’s an important point to highlight. As Bitcoin data centers become more efficient, their energy and resource consumption WILL CONTINUE TO RISE. Denying this doesn't make it disappear. But it also means that energy companies have a new industry paying for power, and this changes the financial outcome for many energy companies worldwide which has a tremendous social impact. The mining industry is now also participating in the chip industry, but that's a different story. 👀 ✨ Naturally, we had to cut some great interviews to make Dirty Coin as fast-paced and engaging as it is. MARA's announcement they are recycling heat from Bitcoin mining rigs to heat the homes of almost 80,000 residents (1.4% of Finland's population) is the largest application yet for heat recycling. Here's why it's significant. Finland's grid is mostly clean energy, however 25% of home heating is still fossil fuel-based. By running mining rigs on clean energy, and recycling the heat they produce for home heating, Bitcoin mining, if scaled up could obviate the need for fossil fuel based heating in homes across Finland. Bitcoin has already been shown to have a decarbonizing impact on the world in peer reviewed research by 1. mitigating methane (Rudd et al, 2024), 2. replacing the need for gas peaker plants (Bruno et al, 2023), 3. allowing grids to be build with higher amounts of renewable energy (Rhodes et al) 4. accelerating the green energy transition (Lal et al, 2023) 5. accelerating renewable energy based microgrids development (Moghimi et al, 2024) The heat recycling efforts MARA is now pursuing at scale provides a 6th way that Bitcoin is an environmental force for good.

Meet Gridless, a Bitcoin miner solving Africa’s energy crisis. Over 50% of Africans lack electricity. Gridless wants to change that. They work with local power producers to build microgrids. These grids turn stranded energy into electricity for rural areas. How? By using Bitcoin mining. Gridless buys unused energy and puts it to work. It’s a win-win: miners get power, and communities get light. Gridless has already powered: 1,200 homes in Zambia 1,800 homes in Malawi 5,000 homes in Kenya Their projects also provide public Wi-Fi, cold storage for farmers, and charging stations for electric bikes. Their approach? Decentralized. Smaller mining sites spread across many regions. It’s resilient and community-focused. Gridless isn’t just mining Bitcoin.
