Marija Vranic, professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and researcher at IPFN/GoLP, together with PhD student Óscar Amaro, contributed to the first experimental observation of nonlinear Compton scattering, published on 14 October 2024 in Nature Photonics. This discovery, achieved through an international collaboration, demonstrated how high-energy electrons absorb multiple photons and emit a single gamma-ray photon of exceptionally high energy. The theoretical framework guiding the experiment, including large-scale simulations and analytical models, was developed by Marija Vranic and Óscar Amaro. The gamma-ray beam generated in the study, conducted at CoReLS in South Korea, was a thousand times brighter than previous records at this energy scale. #IPFN #GoLP #NaturePhotonics #Physics

As part of the “Engenharia e Ciência vão à Escola” initiative by Instituto Superior Técnico, held during Science and Technology Week (18-22 November), students from Lisbon, Loures, and Oeiras had the opportunity to engage with researchers in interactive sessions that sparked their curiosity and passion for science. IPFN researchers Bruno Soares Gonçalves and Gonçalo Figueira shared their expertise with the students through engaging activities, such us creative drawings showing how they imagined what being a scientist would be like, and sharing thoughtful reflections and writing meaningful feedback about the concepts they had learned. Through these activities, IPFN not only inspired students but also revealed the excitement and relevance of science in our daily lives, encouraging the next generation to explore and question the world around them. 🗯️ 💡 #ipfn #engenhariaeciencia #scienceandtechnologymonth #students Full article 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dxakicwZ

The responsible for the Portuguese participation in the European Fusion programme and Director of IPFN, Bruno Soares Gonçalves, attended the inaugural meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) in Rome on 6 November, to discuss how to transform nuclear fusion into a safe and sustainable energy source. 🌍 🌱 Bruno Gonçalves ensures that “we are very eager to contribute actively to make fusion a reality, as we have been doing in the last 35 years.” He also emphasized the “need to attract people into the fields of engineering and to ensure that, once trained, we are able to keep talent in the field. In this endeavor it will require the involvement of all European countries and research institutions.” The event is an initiative of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Italian government, underscoring the growing interest and progress in developing fusion technology to provide a clean, safe and limitless source of energy. The meeting included several members of the Italian government, the IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, and members of the international fusion community. #ipfn #IAEA #fusion Full article 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dhUD6VHA 📷 Dean Calma / IAEA

A recent paper published in Nature Magazine showcases the work of IPFN researcher Rui Coelho, one of the main authors of the study. The physicist, who collaborated with a leading team of scientists on the JET campaigns, is also affiliated with the Department of Physics and the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico. The study highlights the critical role of zonal flows, which are non-linearly driven by EP-induced instabilities, in reducing turbulent energy transport under the conditions explored. 🔗 Full article: https://lnkd.in/drqhdpvu #ipfn #nature #jet
