Our CEO, Anastasia-Nikita Bansal, weighed in on a hot question from Marketecture Media and AdTechGod (™): how do you build an SSP that matters in 2025? If you’ve got valuable data and want full control over private marketplace deals, running your own #SSP sounds great—until you hit the hidden fees and tech overhead. Fortunately, shortcuts exist: white-label platforms can shave months (and money) off development. The real question is: do you take the DIY route or team up with the right partner? Let’s discuss.
Recently, I came across a particularly intriguing piece of content in the latest newsletter from Marketecture Media and AdTechGod (™). Towards the end, it posed a fascinating question: "What do you think it takes to build a new SSP in 2025?" 🤔 Given our substantial background and experience in the SSP business, I thought it would be worthwhile to share our point of view and expand on the arguments presented with insights from our own practice. "If you've got valuable data and don't want to broker it directly as a third-party provider, then the next best option is to partner with an SSP and create deal-IDs that represent your data. Pros: - Don't need to build DSP pipes or change buyer behavior - No billing”. If you have valuable data and can monetize it through direct, high-value advertising campaigns, owning your own SSP makes sense. It allows you to control pricing, negotiate PMP deals, and deliver curated, clean traffic with sensitive data. For large publishers who understand programmatic beyond Google products, integrating a DSP becomes straightforward thanks to significant traffic and clean inventory. However, it’s important to note that while SSPs offer "no billing" on the surface, hidden fees and margins often come into play, subtly reducing the price you ultimately receive.💡 "Build an 'MVP' exchange on BidSwitch. This isn't a BidSwitch commercial, I'm just saying that they are a fast and easy way to get started. Pros: - Just invest in the parts you need to own - Get live with your own exchange relatively quickly”. All this is also achievable without building everything from scratch. The market today offers a variety of ready-made solutions, including white-label providers and outsourcing companies with pre-built components, significantly reducing technical complexity and time-to-market. 🛠️ “Sammy asked me what type of staffing he might need to build a "real" SSP. Assuming he is still using BidSwitch for some of his connections, and is being scrappy, I told him he needed to build: - A high-performance server that could send out bid requests to multiple parties - A logging server for impression counting and billing - A simple UI for reporting and some administration”. If you want an SSP that goes beyond simply sending traffic, receiving bids, and running auctions—and instead requires advanced features like automated pricing mechanisms powered by ML, inventory management, smart demand and traffic load distribution, prebid integrations, detailed analytics, and extensive customization options—then building an SSP and DSP from scratch is not the best approach. From our experience, this is a complex process. It’s far better to partner with companies that have the expertise to save you time and have already overcome these challenges. Your Thoughts?
