Sea turtles are famous for travelling thousands of kilometres to breed yet spend most of their lives in their foraging areas. Identifying these locations is therefore key to understanding and protecting sea turtles and their habitats. A new study, led by former Aldabra Science Coordinator, Cheryl Sanchez for her PhD, combined skin samples and satellite tracking of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) nesting at Aldabra, the second largest green turtle nesting area in the Western Indian Ocean to identify their key foraging areas. Results showed that Aldabra’s nesting turtles forage in two main areas: the East African coast (Tanzania and Somalia) and northern Madagascar, with slightly more heading to the East African coast. This is the first research in the region to use both satellite tracking and stable isotope analysis to locate foraging grounds, and clearly shows that the foraging habitat of Aldabra's nesting green turtles extends well beyond legally protected areas, into the wider Seychelles, Western Indian Ocean and East African coastal region. In 2023, we completed the second Aldabra Clean-Up Project, supported by the Ocean Conservancy, where we removed another 23.5 tonnes of marine debris from Aldabra's pristine beaches. Although clean-up efforts are vital for preserving the shores of Aldabra for the various species that depend on them, the issue of plastic pollution extends far beyond. Plastic consumption is a global problem that affects every corner of our planet, from the most remote islands like #Aldabra to the deep sea. New research has been published highlighting how seabird populations contribute to healthy mangrove ecosystems on Aldabra. The research shows the strong links between seabirds nesting in the mangroves and the nutrient status of the mangrove forests, highlighting the importance of protecting and restoring seabird populations for maintaining healthy mangrove ecosystems. Annabelle Constance, de Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF), et Rivo Rabarisoa de Asity Madagascar ont une passion commune : la conservation des écosystèmes marins et côtiers, notamment les mangroves. 🌿 🌊 Elles ont bénéficié du programme d'échanges d'expériences du projet #RECOS de la COI 📌 Dans les États insulaires du Sud-Ouest de l'océan Indien, les mangroves s'étendent sur plus de 300 000 hectares. Vulnérables aux effets du changement climatique, ces écosystèmes essentiels et vitaux pour les populations côtières sont exposés à une nouvelle menace : la prolifération du rat noir (Rattus rattus). Cette espèce nuisible détruit les troncs de mangroves s'attaque aussi aux oiseaux marins qui y nichent et s’y reproduisent, comme le crabier blanc, une espèce menacée. En vue de répondre à ces problématiques, Annabelle et Rivo ont eu l’occasion d'échanger sur le terrain et de bénéficier de la précieuse expertise de GEPOMAY, à travers le projet Life de l'Union européenne.
