    How a 19th century sewing machine producer pioneered embedded insurance…   Sometimes a good idea needs quite some time to pick up speed and unfold its true market potential. In the case of embedded insurance, in spite what many people think, it has been around for quite a while. The sewing machine manufacturer Singer for example bundled insurance into their sewing machine offering already in 1870! In a guest article for the German insurance magazine VWheute, I discuss how we can enable the potential of embedded insurance for both the insurance sector, and all kinds of retail or e-commerce platforms.   So what makes the difference today? Technology. Today, new technology can empower virtually any company to offer its customers insurance solutions. Through this they can scale up their business, build deeper relationships with their customers and increase the customer life time value.   According to Capgemini, 50 percent of customers are today willing to buy insurance products from non-traditional players, while 56 percent of medium-sized companies expect to generate revenue from embedded insurance by the end of this decade.   Also insurers and insurance intermediaries can benefit. Three factors are crucial: 👉 Traditional insurance product infrastructure must be opened up via open interfaces (APIs). 👉 Fully understanding the customer’s needs. Non-insurance companies know a lot about the real needs of customers due to their deeper relationships and the data they have. 👉 For insurers, having the courage to try new things and co-create new offerings with partners – something the industry often struggles with. The opportunity is obvious: the industry could reposition itself and gain more customer trust through genuine value creation by closing down existing protection gaps and more attractive solutions for customers.   In the first comment you will find a link to the article, but don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to know more about my thoughts how the insurance industry can profit from embedded insurance.   So finally the question remains: what happened to Singer?   • EIR IS TURNING 5 YEARS OLD! Today, 5 years ago, Eir came into existence. Since then, it has developed into what we believe is a great company, challenging the industry. We have only grown premiums to well over EUR 60 million in under five years, but became profitable in the summer. There are many people to thank, but in particular: 🫶 First, our fantastic team, who makes this company what it is every day through your commitment, energy and great spirits. But also, past team members, who were there in the early days and built the foundations we today stand on. You know who you are… 🫶 Second, our brilliant partners, without who we wouldn’t be the company we have become. Your trust and drive make us better, and together we can change what insurance is. Insurance made better… Jointly. 🫶 Last, but by no means least, our great investors, who put their trust in us and were willing give us the funds to go out and build this company. Without your investment these ideas would have remained only ideas, instead of now being put into practise and creating something really quite unique. A note like this will of course never cover everyone that deserves mentioning, and if you are not part of the three groups above, we will still want to say: thank you for helping us along the way! 🙏 Here’s to another great 5 years!

  • It all started in an old milk shop in Oslo… Last Thursday Eir brought together 85 partners and team members to celebrate that Eir turns 5 years old in October. Our founder Torgrim presented how the company was born, and gave us some stories from the first years setting the company up out of an Oslo milk shop (pictured), before hiring the first team members and going live. He went on to tell the audience about the first years, starting up only 4 months before the pandemic, and the progress made until 2022. Our CEO Fredrik then gave his perspective on joining the team in that same year, and his first impressions of the company, before moving on to the last two years and looking forward into 2025-2026. It is safe to say it has been quite a journey since the idea of Eir was born in 2016, with quite a few twists and turns, as well as ups and downs. The group went for drinks at the office before heading out for pizza (and more drinks) to really celebrate the 5-year old. 🙏 We want to thank all our partners who joined us on the day, traveling from all of Scandinavia, as well as from Germany, Spain and Greece to attend. Without you, Eir would not be what we are today. This is very much a joint success. 🙏 Also, a big thank you to the Eir team (past and present) who built what we have today. Already looking forward to the 10 year celebrations!
