Happy New Year! ✨ Incase you missed it, here's the top stories from the past few weeks from enkel to help you get back up to speed with what's going on in Sustainable Fashion ⬇️ 1) Devastated to hear that on the 1st Jan a fire broke out in Accra's Kantamanto Market - one of the worlds largest secondhand markets and where most textiles is exported to. The cause is still to be confirmed, but the market supports the livelihoods of over 10,000 traders and Ghana's community. The Or Foundation have committed $1 million in immediate relief and donation details are in the comments below 🙏 2) Earlier in December, Stella McCartney announced the launch of their Bananatex® Tote Bag - made entirely from naturally grown Abacá plants. 3) KIPRUN, the running brand of Decathlon have developed what is said to be the 'world's first running shoe without glue'. Available in Europe in April 2025, the KipX running shoe is assembled without glue, reducing the overall footprint of the shoe and making easier to dissassemble at end of life. 4) HUGO BOSS announced the launch of 'Eightyards' - a brand dedicated to recycling and reusing the brands surplus materials. However, industry experts are questioning how much surplus materials are used to justify a whole new initiative and if there should be more focus on circular design principles to reduce so much waste in the first place? 5) Congratulations to Thami Schweichler and the team at United Repair Centre, who are the latest company to join the B Lab community. 6) Reconomy have partnered with Fabacus are part of its EPR Regulations (Extended Producer Responsibility) to drive the new retail landscape of transparency, sustainability and compliance. 7) The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) have published a report on textile waste, revealing that textile waste volume increased by more than 50% between 2000 + 2018. The rise is said to be mainly due to the rise of fast fashion, but also the lack of co-ordinated efforts to collect and sort used textiles. 8) Meanwhile, from Jan 2025 Sweden is set to introduce separate waste textile collections to improve circularity in the textile industry. Currently a large proportion of textile waste from households ends up in residual waste and goes directly into incineration with energy recovery. 9) Switzerland is set to open its first industrial textile recycling centre by Tell-Tex AG in 2026. One to watch... 10) And finally for this week, ultra fast-fashion giant SHEIN, who are hoping to list on the London Stock Exchange in 2025, are being reviewed by a UK parliamentary committee for questioning over labour practices and abuses in supply chains. They will face a UK hearing on the 7th Jan, and Temu will also be reviewed. 🔗 Links to articles in comments.
