IRRIOT - Irrigation IoT Wireless Irrigation solutions for smart farming and gardening with an aim to save water, electricity, get better crops, using latest IoT technology. IRRIOT provides a wireless, self-powered irrigation automation platform with the main goal to significantly reduce water wastage in agriculture, save on electrical bills, eliminate human factor and provide better crop yields in food production for our fast growing population. IRRIOT’s platform combines the power of the latest IoT low power and long-range radio communication technology (LoRa), and the cloud computing. By bridging them, we create the next generation of smart irrigation solutions.

  • Solar-Powered Off-Grid Irrigation Automation At IRRIOT, we often receive inquiries about whether our Wireless Precision Irrigation Automation system can be used in locations without access to a power grid or other sources of electricity. The answer is a resounding YES! While many customers typically install our Controller in areas such as pump houses or farmhouses, our solution is equally effective in remote locations with only a communal water source and a diesel pump, for example. We understand these challenges and have designed our system to operate entirely off-grid when necessary. Several of our customers are already successfully implementing this option in their setups.     Chief Science Officer at Sensonomic

    Today Patrick Sjöberg gave me the grand tour of Mære landbruksskole in Trøndelag, Norway. Together we're starting a collaboration with ONiO on a 24 million NOK project funded by Norges forskningsråd. The focus is to equip growers with low-cost, batteryless sensors for yield forecasting and precision agriculture. Right now the high cost of sensors prohibits growers from deploying them at scale (think every plant). Reliance on batteries also requires frequent visits to the field or digging sensors out of the ground. In addition, climate is becoming more variable, and necessitates more frequent adjustments to inputs. By the same token, harvest is becoming harder to predict, as past trends are no longer a reliable indicator of the future. The project will address these challenges by developing low cost sensor and software systems for better farm management. ONiO will construct self-powered sensors harvesting ambient energy from radio waves to capture soil, weather, and plant conditions. Sensonomic in turn will make use of these data by adapting its algoritms and dashboards for predictive and prescriptive agricultural analytics. Mære will assist with testing in the field for berries, apples, and other high value crops. It was impressive to see the facilities on offer from Mære. It has installed LEDs above and within tomato canopies, which have boosted yields by 25%. In their strawberry tunnels, they have put in place sensors from IRRIOT to adjust irrigation levels according to soil moisture levels. They are also testing wood-based growth media from Fibergrow to replace carbon intensive Perlite. Last but not least, ONiO sensors are already gathering data. There was a lot of talk about strawberries. Irrigation valves may block up and deprive tunnel sections of water. Sensors for early detection could protect against these losses. Similarly they could augment the data used for yield forecasting. Flower maps of the root crown indicate the number of buds and leaves in the coming season. Sensor information about growing conditions could refine esimates of potential production. It will be exciting to workshop these ideas with Patrick in the weeks to come.
