The first off-site meeting brought together all 17 MARC-Mälardalen University Automation Research Center staff members from the three research areas to showcase their expertise, research focus, and roles within MARC projects. 👏 The leaders of MARC’s research areas—Jessica Bruch (Portable and Automation), Alessandro Vittorio Papadopoulos (Robotics and Control), and Mikael Sjödin (Computing Continuum and Digital infrastructure)—introduced their teams and provided updates on ongoing research initiatives. These insights complemented the vision shared by our Research Center Director, Thomas Nolte. He emphasized MARC's commitment to driving innovation in digitalization and automation, aiming to be Sweden's leading research center for excellence in education and research. Thomas also highlighted key tools and strategies, such as IRR, master theses, future projects, funding plans, and undergraduate programs, as essential pillars of our progress. We were honored to host members of our Industrial Advisory Board, including Fredrik Hedenfalk (ABB), Catarina Berglund (Automation Region), Anna Bird (MITC - Mälardalen Industrial Technology Center), Joao Pedrassoli (Volvo Construction Equipment), and Anna Wenemark (Alfa Laval). Their presence reinforced the critical role of industry collaboration. A warm welcome to guest professor Tommaso Cucinotta to MARC-Mälardalen University Automation Research Center and Mälardalen University! 👏 ❣ Thanks for the KK-stiftelsen-funded international guest professor project, which offers a great opportunity to collaborate with Tommaso and his network in academia and industry. In addition to research, Tommaso will also give seminars and PhD courses here at MDU. The first seminar is scheduled for Thursday, November 21st, stay tuned! Tommaso Cucinotta received his MSc degree in computer engineering from Università di Pisa, Italy, in 2000, and his PhD degree in computer engineering from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA), Italy, in 2004, where he has been investigating real-time scheduling for soft #realtime and #multimedia applications and #predictability in infrastructures for cloud computing and #NFV. He has been a member of the technical staff (MTS) in Bell Labs in Dublin, Ireland, investigating on security and real-time performance of cloud services. He has been a software engineer at #AmazonWebServices in Dublin, Ireland, where he worked on improving the performance and scalability of #DynamoDB. He has been an associate professor at the Real-Time Systems Laboratory (RETIS) of SSSA since 2016, and coordinator of the Cyber-Physical Research Area since 2019. He has co-authored 120+ research papers on international conferences and journals, and 8 international patent grants. The MARC-Mälardalen University Automation Research Center research project 2.2 aims to create a robust #cybersecurity solution for industrial environments where multiple robots work together. It will address vulnerabilities specific to multi-robot interactions and #dataexchanges in industrial settings. In MARC-Mälardalen University Automation Research Center Research Area 2, Robotics and Control, led by Alessandro Vittorio Papadopoulos. There are 3 initiated research projects. The first research project, 2.1: Automated planning and distributed control in industrial robotics, aims to create a complex automated planning and #distributedcontrol system for a group of #robots in an #industrialenvironment. MARC-Mälardalen University Automation Research Center Research Project 1.2 Digital technologies for smart automation Digitalisation, a main potential driver for smart manufacturing, is closely linked to #Industry4.0 digital technologies (i.e., combinations of information, #computing, communication, and #connectivitytechnologies), such as the #Internet of Things (#loT), artificial intelligence (#Al), and big data technologies. By continually adjusting and optimising online production, digital technologies aim to improve processes' flexibility and reliability and improve industrial firms' product quality and maintenance practices in production. The project focuses on solutions addressing the perceived complexity when developing, integrating, using, and maintaining #automationsystems. The focus is to create solutions addressing the perception that automation technology is too complex and technically advanced. Based on the three research areas and the use cases of MARC, we have identified seven initial research projects to advance the state of the art in each area. All projects involve multiple industrial partners and have been designed both to deliver results of short-term interest for the partners and to long-term strengthen the academic environment. ✅ Check out the research project 1.1 "Production equipment recyclability through portable automation" ,This project aims to develop and implement solutions for #portableautomation enabling #recycling and reusing of #robotautomation systems. Collaboration with industrial partners is a central element of MARC-Mälardalen University Automation Research Center's research plan, bringing together expertise from academia and industry.
