This simple rearrangement of the choice architecture encourages guests to try these options first. 🍽️ Serve with care: Offer modest portions to reduce food waste (and the risk of a food coma!) while ensuring everyone enjoys their favorites. Those who want more can always go for seconds. 🍹 Sustainable drinks with a twist: Serving water at the holiday table might not sound exciting, but how about a Citrus Serenade (orange-infused water) or Ruby Splash (water with pomegranate)? Elevate the appeal of healthier options by infusing water with fresh fruits and giving them fun, festive names. Small changes like these can create big smiles and make a difference for our planet. Are your recycling bins sending off the right signs? 👀 ♻️ It turns out, we’re often more influenced by the signs in our environment than we realize. Small changes to the way things are arranged—like the size of your trash and recycling bins—can make a big difference in encouraging sustainable habits. Take Fort Collins, Colorado, USA, for example, the area implemented: 🚮 Smaller bins for trash. ♻️ Larger bins for recycling. By simply swapping bin sizes, residents were nudged into recycling more. The larger bin for recycling sent the signal that this was the preferred, easy choice—while the smaller trash bin made people think twice before tossing something away. It’s not just about bins, though. In Sweden, some municipalities have used more clear sorting agreements that provide straightforward signals, guiding residents toward better recycling. By making detailed sorting the default and adding clear bins for different waste fractions, the process becomes simpler and more intuitive. Why does it work? It’s all about making the right choice easy and obvious. When we see a large recycling bin right in front of us, we’re more likely to use it. When the process is simplified and signaled clearly, we’re more inclined to follow through. 🔎 Want to learn more about how clear signals can boost recycling rates? What happens when you combine EuropeanMobilityWeek, an inspiring city like #Helsingborg, and a bit of dancing? Magic! Yesterday and today, we had the pleasure of co-hosting the EuropeanMobilityWeek National Coordinators meeting alongside Helsingborgs stad. As last year’s proud winners of the European Mobility Week Action Award, it was an honor to share our insights and experiences while working with cities across Europe to drive behavior change for sustainable mobility. Our colleagues Ola Rynge, Jessica Viktorsson, and Victor Bärring led an engaging workshop on the nudging process, diving into how small changes can create big impacts for sustainable mobility. Here are three takeaways from the two days: 1️⃣ Collaboration is key. Cities across Europe face similar challenges in promoting active and sustainable travel. Sharing ideas and experiences unlocks solutions we couldn’t create alone. 2️⃣ Behavior change starts with creativity. The workshop demonstrated how understanding the "why" behind behavior helps craft effective nudges—and sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can spark innovation. 3️⃣ Movement matters! A surprise dance break got everyone energized and showcased how breaking routines can inspire fresh thinking. 🕺💃 A big thanks to our co-hosts Helsingborgs stad, ICLEI Europe and EuropeanMobilityWeek for making these days a success!
