New and very ambitious #open-#source #AI-#based #weather #forecasting and #modelling project started! It is called WeatherGenerator and created by a large European consortium 🇪🇺 🌦️ What makes #WeatherGenerator different from other AI-based weather forecasting projects? It uses "masked token modelling" to allow one model to perform multiple tasks: - 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Input observations and it outputs a gridded (re-)analysis product. - 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Input gridded (re-)analysis product and it outputs analysis data at a future time. - 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴: Input model data and it outputs ground-based and local observations at a certain topographic height. - 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: Input global and coarse-scale weather model data and the output is local high-resolution data. A new open-source AI foundation weather model from IBM Research and NASA-IMPACT is added to our #awesome-#weather-#models list! 🚀 The model is called Prithvi WxC and is a 2.3 billion parameter transformer-based encoder-decoder architecture. What is cool with this new model is that it really aims to be a foundational building block that others can use to create specialised fine-tuned models with. As a matter of fact, with this release also comes two examples of downstream use cases: - IBM Research built a fine-tuned model for downscaling (also called super-resolution) - NASA-IMPACT built a fine-tuned model for improving gravity wave modelling (which is notoriously difficult for physics-based weather models) Really inspiring to see such a great collab on #openscience from IBM Research and NASA-IMPACT 👏 Check out Prithvi WxC in our #awesome-#weather-#models list and make sure to give a ⭐ to keep track of feature releases of AI-based weather models! Having trouble keeping up with the fast developments of AI-based weather forecasting? 🌦️ 🌍 We had too. So we have created an awesome-weather-model page on Github that lists and categorizes all models according to key attributes taken from the papers and Github repos (like spatial/time resolution, number of parameters and open source license, etc). Fun fact: I got really annoyed about updating the readme markdown file manually so I ended up doing all the version control of the metadata in a JSON and then loading it into markdown (after a jsonschema validation).
