Towards Sustainable and Equitable Mobility
Om oss
The Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) is an independent entity that inspires, initiates and supports research and educational activities for the purpose of contributing to new ideas and solutions for developing sustainable and equitable mobility and access in cities. The overriding goal is to strengthen accessibility for all groups while at the same time radically reduce negative local and global environmental impacts of transportation. Through the ”Future Urban Transport (FUT) – How to Deal With Complexity” program we fund research and education within four thematic programs: – Mobility and Access in African Cities (MAC) – Informal and Shared Mobility in Low- and Middle Income Countries (ISM) – Walking as Mode of Transport (Walking) – Urban Freight (UF)environmental impacts of transportation. VREF is tax-exempt in accordance with the Swedish law, which means that the foundations aim to serve the public good. VREF’s processes for funding research and educational activities are transparent and allocated grants cannot be used for the benefit of private companies.

👏 📣 Congratulations and thank you Chebe Polycap Chesifu, for sharing results and good news on your VREF-funded research on the impact of road and street designs on walking as a mode of transport in Sub-Saharan Africa. 👏 📣 We encourage all researchers in the VREF community to follow this example – share and help us share your research results on sustainable and equitable mobility with a wider audience her on LinkedIn and other plattforms! #transportresearch #communicateyourresearch #walkingasamodeoftransport #VREFfundedresearch
I’m excited to announce the publication of our first working paper based on my PhD research on the impact of road and street designs on walking as a mode of transport in Sub-Saharan Africa. The paper assesses pedestrian-friendly and hostile elements using a checklist and analyzed 30 in-depth interviews with residents along two roads with distinct designs in Bamenda, the third largest city in Cameroon, to understand how different road designs influence residents’ willingness to walk, as well as their feelings of safety, comfort, and convenience. Our findings reveal that walking is significantly affected by conflicts with motorized vehicles, particularly motorcycles (also known as ‘okadas’), and poor road conditions. Interestingly, we found that poor road conditions, especially potholes, enhances pedestrian safety by forcing vehicles to slow down, enabling pedestrians to cross roads safely. We highlight the need for policies or enforcement regarding sidewalk use and the design of roads that prioritize walking, enabling pedestrians to walk with dignity and pride. I sincerely appreciate VREF Volvo Research and Educational Foundations for funding this project, Prof. Lawrence Fombe for hosting me during data collection and for being a co-author, and Prof. Karel Martens (he) for his guidance in my PhD research and contribution to this paper. Special thanks to all members of the Fair Transport Lab for your exceptional collaboration. https://lnkd.in/eC2Q-jZZ
