Do you know what the biggest challenge is for women when it comes to learning self-catheterization? It is locating the urethra- the external opening that connects to the tube carrying urine from the bladder out of the body. This difficulty speaks to the limited knowledge many females have of their bodies. We happen to know this, because we carried out a survey about key external, psychological and physiological barriers to teaching intermittent catheterization amongst 69 continence and urology nurses. A reason behind this limited knowledge can be the lack of visual representation of female genitalia as educational materials often focus on male anatomy, leaving female anatomy less represented. Existing societal taboos around discussing female anatomy certainly also contribute to a lack of open dialogue and understanding. We produce millions of medical devices each year. Our maintenance and operating technicians play a critical role in this. Metaphorically speaking, they oversee various production machines much like a conductor oversees an orchestra. Jakob Rosengren, a Maintenance and Operating Technician, who manages a 15-meter-long packaging machine at our production site in Mölndal, Sweden, affirms: “My main responsibility is to ensure the machine’s technical availability and smooth functioning. It’s all about troubleshooting. And troubleshooting can be real detective work sometimes,” he explains. When asked if he finds it tedious or boring, Jakob shakes his head and says it’s the opposite. Take something as basic as the plastic stretch film that is often used to wrap goods to prevent them from being damaged. By reducing its thickness, you can reduce some of your environmental footprint. As an example, by transitioning from 18 microns to 12 microns in plastic film thickness, we have reduced emissions by approximately 10 tons CO2e annually.
