Plastic waste is one of the world's most pressing environmental challenges — and it's only growing. In Singapore alone, 12% of the country’s 1.6 million tonnes of waste is plastic, but only 4% is recycled. The rest ends up incinerated and sent to Pulau Semakau landfill. But there’s hope. 🌊 Honoured to announce a Historic 3 year Memorandum of Understanding with Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) 🌊 We are thrilled to announce that Ocean Purpose Project (OPP) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), paving the way for exciting opportunities for SMF members and MaritimeONE Singapore scholars to give back to the community and contribute to ocean conservation! Last Friday, SMF Chairman, Mr. Weng Yew Hor, toured the OPP Beach Hub in Pasir Ris to see firsthand our efforts in mitigating ocean pollution beyond beach clean ups and awareness campaigns. Our initiatives, including pushing for maritime adoption of converting plastic waste into low sulphur fuel (VLSFO) and hydrogen through chemical recycling, and utilizing seaweed as Singapore's 1st seaweed blue carbon sequestration project and sustainable agricultural fertilizer in the OPP Traditional Herb Garden, align with our mission to turn ocean pollution into positive solutions. 🌱 What’s in Store for MaritimeONE Scholars? Yearly Beach Clean-ups: Scholars will actively participate in beach clean-ups around Pasir Ris Park, promoting the importance of reducing beach pollution. Groundbreaking Blue Economy Synergies: Scholars will explore how the maritime industry can contribute to ocean conservation efforts by using frameworks developed by OPP to create sustainable synergies among maritime stakeholders. This collaboration will help instill a sense of environmental responsibility in the next generation of maritime leaders, while also offering them real-world experiences in sustainability. We are excited about the future of this partnership and look forward to working together to create a cleaner, more sustainable ocean for all. As concerns over ocean pollution grow, marine salvage law is evolving to ensure that efforts to protect the environment are rewarded. Despite significant strides, the current laws still offer limited incentives for salvors to prioritize environmental protection. The 1989 Salvage Convention introduced critical changes, but experts argue it remains inadequate in addressing the environmental risks involved. Salvors play a vital role in preventing pollution, yet they often face insufficient compensation for the risks they assume when assisting ships in danger of environmental harm. 🔍 Key Concerns in Current Salvage Law: Limited Incentives for Environmental Protection: Salvors are typically compensated based on the value of the ship and cargo saved, not for minimizing environmental damage. The Scarcity of Compensation for Environmental Risks: Many salvage operations, particularly those involving pollution threats, involve high risks but low rewards for protecting the environment. Despite this, salvors are not always compensated for the benefit they provide in reducing the environmental impact of these incidents. ⚖️ The Salvage Convention's Impact: The Salvage Convention 1989 sought to improve incentives for salvors by recognising the skill and efforts of salvors in preventing or minimizing damage to the environment as a factor in awarding salvage compensation and a safety net for salvors who may not receive a reward for their environmental efforts but ensures they recover expenses if pollution is prevented. However, these provisions remain a "safety net" and often do not adequately reward the environmental value salvors provide. 💡 Potential for Reform: The INTERNATIONAL SALVAGE UNION (ISU) has advocated for a new approach, pushing for changes to the 1989 Convention. Their goal? To ensure salvors are properly rewarded for minimizing environmental damage, not just for saving ships and cargo. SCOPIC (Special Compensation P&I Club Clause), a solution within the Lloyd's Open Form (LOF), addresses some of these gaps but still fails to fully compensate for the environmental benefits of salvage operations. At Ocean Purpose Project, we recognize the importance of integrating environmental considerations into all aspects of maritime law and operation. The shocking revelation that the COP29 Chief Executive was promoting fossil fuel deals is a wake-up call: while climate summits like COP29 should propel us toward a sustainable future, fossil fuel giants still hold the reins. It is obvious that events like COP have been co-opted and turned into a hidden layer of fossil fuel trade fairs. It’s clear that the oil and gas industry has the funds, infrastructure, and reach to drive global climate solutions. So, since Big Oil has subverted the COP29 process, why aren’t reversing the playbook and forcing them to use their power and money for good? 🌍 Revolutionary Tech to Clean Up the Planet Our Ocean Purpose Project’s Plastic to Fuel/Hydrogen Unit is proof of how existing technology can be harnessed for impactful change. This groundbreaking technology converts ocean plastic waste into hydrogen fuel—a clean, sustainable alternative with the potential to replace fossil fuels. 🔋 If oil giants repurposed just 5% of their current infrastructure and investments to scale solutions like these, the impact would be transformative: 🔹 Over 500 million tons of plastic waste could be processed into hydrogen every year. One of OPP's clients, a famous tanker company could turn it's 1.1 million tonnes of plastic generated per year into at least 809,000 tonnes of hydrogen - solving the plastic waste and energy issue, accelerating marine decarbonisation. 🔹 Millions spent on classic "oil and Gas" greenwashing can be channeled into innovation- why waste money on lavish advertising and marketing firms when the money could be better spent on new products and services 🔹 Ocean pollution would be drastically reduced, especially in coastal communities 🔹 Global carbon emissions could be cut by millions of tons 🚨 Redirecting Responsibility: The Oil Industry’s Role in Repairing Our Planet Instead of pouring billions into gas deals, fossil fuel companies should be mandated to reinvest in clean energy infrastructure (not just create accelerators and startup mentorship programs). Over the past week, the Southern California coastline has been lit up by blue bioluminescent waves caused by Lingulodinium polyedra, a type of dinoflagellate algae. It is photosynthetic, capturing sunlight in the upper layer of the ocean and converting it to chemical energy. When conditions are right these dinoflagellates may go through a population explosion called an algal bloom which produces a mesmerizing blue glow at night when agitated by the ocean's movements, creating stunning nighttime displays for beachgoers and surfers alike. However, with beauty often comes complexity. During the day, a rusty coat covers the waters. As these bioluminescent algae die off, they release hydrogen sulfide gas, resulting in a pungent odor reminiscent of rotten eggs. This week's reports from Venice, Santa Monica, and beyond have residents grappling with a fishy stench, an unfortunate side effect of nature’s spectacle. 🔬 Why does this happen? Researchers are still studying the implications of these algae blooms on marine life and human health. Although there is currently no public health warning, some individuals have reported minor allergic reactions during previous red tide events. As Laura Rink from Heal the Bay Aquarium explains, as bacteria feed on decomposing algae, they lead to “dead zones” or "red tides" which are notorious for sucking up all of the oxygen in the water and leaving for dead everything from small invertebrates to any fish unfortunate enough to be in the area at the time. While this bloom is spectacular in its glow, it serves as a reminder of the delicate balance in our marine ecosystems. It also hearkens to Singapore's own foray with neon blue waves which OPP's daily advocacy work revealed looked very different in the day. With climate change affecting ocean temperatures, we can expect more frequent algae blooms, some of which may have adverse effects on marine life and human health. 🐬 A Word of Caution: Experts urge surfers and swimmers to exercise caution. Although the species Lingulodinium polyedra is not typically harmful to humans, exposure can lead to allergic responses and potential infections due to high bacterial concentrations associated with the blooms. As always, it’s best to prioritize safety when enjoying our coastlines.
