The SMC concluded its final training session for 2024 yesterday (13 Dec 2024) with a mandarin course on the basic of facilitative mediation for 19 participants from East China University of Political Science and Law and Pudong Justice Bureau. We would like to thank Principal trainer Lawrence Tan (FCIArb) and co-trainer Ge Huangbin for guiding the participants through the processes and providing insights into the delicate art of dispute management. The SMC would like to welcome faculty members of East China University of Political Science and Law and 19 mediators and lawyers from the Pudong Justice Bureau to Singapore this 9th to 13th December 2024. Participants were welcomed at a dinner on the 9th by Assistant Registrar Ramu Miyapan and received at the Supreme Court of Singapore today to learn more about the SMC and court annexed mediation and to network with some of our mediators. Over the next few days, the SMC will introduce the participants to the fundamentals of facilitative mediation. 15 participants from the Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management (TADM) concluded the first portion of their 5-day intensive training on facilitative and evaluative mediation at the SMC yesterday, 6 Dec 2024. This partnership will see about 60 mediators trained and accredited over a period of one year. We thank TADM for trusting us with the training of their officers. The foresight to continually train and refresh the skills of the officers is what puts TADM at the forefront of dispute resolution. Sixteen candidates went through the practical examination of the Mediation Skills Assessment yesterday to become SMC accredited mediators. The SMC was delighted to have played a part on 23 November 2024 in training 12 participants from the Leadership Development Programme of The Purple Parade on ‘Negotiating Your Way to Success (module 1)’. Principal Trainer - Lum Kit-Wye - brought participants through the theory of interest based negotiation, followed by practical role plays for better understanding of the techniques. Nineteen enthusiastic participants came together over the course of 3 days to complete module 2 of Strategic Conflict Management for Professionals. Adeptly led by principal trainers Tat Lim and David Lim, participants were able to build on their foundational knowledge of mediation and were provided in-depth skills and techniques to navigate different scenarios with cultural nuances. The family focused Strategic Conflict Management for Professionals (module 1) concluded yesterday for an intimate group of participants. It was two days of frank and honest discussions, with some light moments of laughter to break the solemnity of the role plays presented. Principal trainer Seng Onn Loong brought the class through the delicate process of negotiating emotionally charged family scenarios to uncover the true interests of parties that might hopefully lead to a compromise.
