🌊 Bringing the Sea’s Voice to the Shore 🌊 An insightful piece featuring Julie Angus from Open Ocean Robotics, highlighting innovative solutions for protecting Singapore’s waters. 🌐💡 Her perspectives underscore the importance of technology in safeguarding marine environments and advancing coastal protection. Check out this inspiring read and join the conversation on shaping a sustainable future for our seas! 🐟🌎 #UncrewedSurfaceVessel #ClimateResilience #CoastalProtection #SmartPorts #SustainableTechnology
Bringing the Sea’s Voice to the Shore: Julie Angus on Protecting Singapore’s Waters with Open Ocean Robotics 🌊 Engaging with Julie Angus, the founder of Open Ocean Robotics, during her visit to PIER71™ Smart Port Challenge 2024 in Singapore offered a glimpse into the future of coastal protection. Renowned as the first woman to row across the Atlantic Ocean from mainland to mainland, Julie has channeled her adventurous spirit and scientific acumen into driving sustainable solutions for ocean monitoring by creating an unmanned, solar-powered surface vessel (USV) —the DataXplorer. Her mission: to amplify the sea’s untamed voice and connect it with decision-makers on land. How can persistent ocean monitoring benefit Singapore? 📈 Long-term planning As an island nation vulnerable to rising sea levels, Singapore requires reliable, long-term data to plan for climate change adaptation and marine conservation measures effectively. Continuous monitoring helps in developing informed strategies to protect coastal infrastructure and ecosystems. 🚢 Port operations and security As a global maritime hub, Singapore is uniquely positioned to embrace this evolving technology. Julie sees immense potential for her autonomous vessels to adopt advanced features such as AI-powered collision avoidance technology, camera surveillance, and alert systems to enhance port security amidst Singapore’s bustling waters. 💧Water quality monitoring Recent challenges such as oil spill incidents, highlight the urgent need for innovative solutions. With early detection enabled by USVs, response and cleanup teams can be deployed swiftly, minimizing delays and mitigating impacts. USVs could also be deployed in reservoirs to monitor water quality parameters, including dissolved oxygen and other critical indicators. ♻️ Sustainability The solar-powered vessel provides a cleaner alternative to traditional fuel-powered vessels. By harnessing renewable solar energy, it eliminates greenhouse gas emissions during operation, reducing its environmental footprint. Additionally, the autonomous vessel’s low operational costs and zero reliance on fossil fuels make it a long-term, economically viable solution for ocean monitoring and management. “Autonomous vessels are the inevitable future,” Julie firmly believes. Open Ocean Robotics, the first runner-up in the maritime innovation competition, invites local industry players passionate about the nexus of technology and environmental stewardship to collaborate on pilot projects. Let the sea’s voice not only be heard but also acted upon along the Singapore coastline. #UncrewedSurfaceVessel #ClimateResilience #CoastalProtection #SmartPorts #SustainableTechnology Link in comment
