[#ThrowbackThursday] 𝗔 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝘀𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗷𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗠𝗔𝗬 𝗖𝗮𝗳é 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘆 The MAY Café and Bakery project by FeA , led by Vu Nam Son and Vu Quynh Giao, comprised a renovation of two existing buildings with two different architectural styles: a streetside café and a portion of a neoclassical wedding hall. Instead of demolishing, the architects retained the buildings and linked them together with a fluid, curved roof design. The materials have been selected for their local availability, affordability, ease of maintenance and climate resilience. They have also been processed using replicable techniques to make them safe and suitable for the functions. It was known for being the headquarters for the #LeeRubberCompany in the 1930s, also serving as the Japanese Secret Police Headquarters during the 2nd World War and as offices plus retail in the new millennium. In its transformation into Else Kuala Lumpur, the façade was rehabilitated and the perimeter optimised for hotel rooms. The design by Studio Bikin and Faizah Architect 'surgically' removed sections of the floor plates to naturally ventilate corridors and introduce natural lighting.
