The “Minuteman” challenge

This is a short video we put together, a brief description of what we call the “Minuteman” marksmanship challenge (MMC). Also, we included our first attempt at it. Our goal is to develop our marksmanship skill safely and efficiently. Ideally, the MMC will develop into an engaging conversation that shooter’s, hunters and gun enthusiast can have have with one another. We will be posting our results, as a family, over the next several months so we can share our results. Moreover, using a bolt action rifle, under the pressure of time, moving through the four shooting positions, while applying the multi target, tiered shooting structure is a unique challenge that gets your heart racing. We believe the MMC is also a fantastic way to develop a solid relationship with your rifle. Furthermore, it provides the repetition in action to get proper gun safety into a physical second nature. If you feel you are up to the MMA challenge please do so safely.

A family trip to the hunting property.

We hunt mostly deer so the property is left alone from winter to summer. This helps keep pressure of the land but from time to time we sneak up for a few days to trim branches, clear fields, plant food crops, or in this case, acclimate the children to hunting, tracking, and gun safety. It’s best we do this in the off season. Also, There have been many signs of hogs coming through so we were prepared to harvest a few if they came into sight. Our boy can tell me what all the tracks are found along the property and he is doing a good job of passing that knowledge down to his younger sister.

The transfer of knowledge

My boy is learning how to call in deer. We teamed up on this trip in one of the stands we placed together this summer. We were on the edge of a field just inside a timber line. The new moon was two days ago, we had a temperature drop, and the wind was at our face. My boy would blow a grunt, alternating from a young buck to a mature buck. Just one or two calls every 15min. Then, I proceeded to hit the rattle bag with a loud clash, then the sound of the tangled pushes, then another clash. Then silence. No more than 5 minutes later this beautiful buck ran out of the timber, under our stand, and stopped at the edge of the field looking out intensely. At no more than 30 yards away I was able to place the perfect shot. The buck laid where he stood. We were eating venison tenderloin 2 hours later… Meat never frozen, never even cold.

The boy was able to put a lot into practice on this trip. Moreover, two of my good friends drove up to join the hunt. So the boy got to absorb the “hunt camp culture" for several days. He witnessed gentlemen making plans, playing the wind, telling stories, and practicing good safety.

The spectrum of this rainbow starts with clearing all the stands and planting food crops and ends with dry-aging venison and a beautiful roast on the dinner table.

Today we are adding 20 logs to the mushroom garden. Half oyster and half shiitake. The term that comes to mind is passive-food production. It will take two years for these logs to start sprouting mushrooms. But once they get going, they will produce for 3 to 5 years (depending on the diameter) over two years ago we started this and are now seeing the benefit. If every year we add 20 logs… could you imagine 10 years from now! (universe willing) It is a rewarding feeling to carve mushrooms off logs. Not to mention the nutritional content of #shiitake, #Lionsmane and #Rishi. Mushrooms have been a living food and medicine we’ve developed a relationship with for 10,000 generations.
