My son did his first hive inspection today. He helped move a few frames around and got up close and personal with our bees.

A girl and her bees.

Our daughter felt like sharing a little bit of her knowledge on honey bees today. There hasn’t been a moment we had to do hive inspections and she did not want to participate. The children are fascinated with the life of the bees and we believe that this early understanding of how the colony functions will give them early insight on the world around them.

Today, the backyard smelled like smoke, honey, and strawberries.
The children are understanding how powerful they can be as young individuals. A good friend of ours is great at empowering individuals with life-saving skills and we were fortunate enough to work alongside him on our latest family affair. Together, we learned about how and when to apply CPR. All of us were able to train on adult and infant simulators. We were happily surprised to witness our son, strong enough, able to apply adequate chest compressions on the adult setup. Our little guy felt empowered knowing that he could possibly save the lives of his family members. Our daughter did not quite have the strength for the adults at this time but she was excited about working with the infants. We also learned how to properly use an AED, and the proper way to help one who is choking even if the one choking is yourself and no one else is around. Much of the great insight from our instructor comes from his lengthy personal experience. The lessons in how to apply the techniques we learned and the maintaining of situational awareness was taught in tandem. We were also placed in make-believe scenarios that helped us understand how vulnerable we could be at any given time. This was a great lesson that has brought us closer as a family. We recommend Learning these skills if you don’t already know. Also, If it’s been a while it’s a good excuse to learn it again because there is a difference between the way it is taught today than just few years ago.

An early taste of our Honey bees efforts.

The top of the on the frame is a blonde, early-season honey that taste sweet, buttery and floral. The honey type that merges to the lower part of the frame is a darker, spicier and richer clover honey which you see in this area in early summer. It’s great to experience the taste comparison. Moreover, it is beautiful to see the spring/summer merger represented in the honeycomb.

This morning we inspected our hive. We discovered that the bees are ahead of schedule and ready for the new super. The larger bottom portion, the brood box, is where the queen is. All propagation of the hive us find here… raising, feeding young, etc. The slender box above that is the super. The super is the honey storage for the bees. This is their honey storage that will get them through the winter. The top box that we installed this morning is another super. This will be our honeycomb. Just below it we installed a metal divider calked a queen bee excluder. This will prevent the queen from climbing up and laying eggs (brood) in our honey. It allows the worker bees to pass through but the openings are to small for the big queen to slip through. The more involved we get in our apiary the more we understand how simple the complexity is…. Layers of amazement.

Children learning to care.
We are continually teaching our children necessary horticultural techniques and methods to enable them to become successful growers. They are currently learning how to manage root shock that can occur from transplanting. More precisely, they are learning how to prune wilted areas and divert the growth into the newly forming leaves. Very soon these plants will be strong enough to be transplanted outside. Moreover, the children are learning how to transfer into hydroponic environments with soilless mediums at the studio.
