Grameen Thailand Gains Insights from Grameen Experts in Bangladesh On February 3rd, the Grameen Thailand team visited Grameen Bank in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to learn firsthand from Grameen Experts about impactful microfinance methodologies. Led by Callum Mackenzie (Managing Director), Paricha Duangtaweesub (Director of Venture), and Pimpilai Rumthum (Microfinance Project Manager), the team received a warm welcome and valuable insights on scaling operations and adapting the Grameen Model to Thailand’s context. On the first day, the team traveled to Mirzapur town, where K.M. Tipu Sultan (Senior Principal Officer, International Program Department, Grameen Bank) guided them through a branch office and a local center meeting. Observing Grameen’s field operations in action, the team engaged with officers and community members to exchange knowledge. Later, the team visited Center No. 21, a village of 3,000 residents, to witness the weekly microfinance meeting, gaining deeper insight into financial inclusion for underserved communities. This experience provided a firsthand look at the Grameen Model in practice, helping the team understand scaling operations and refine strategies to fit Thailand’s unique needs. Yunus Thailand is collaborating with international schools and educators to empower the next generation through circular economy initiatives and social entrepreneurship. Last week, we partnered with educators from the International School of Bangkok (ISB) for a two-day "Pollutions to Solutions" program, where students explored Bangkok’s waste management challenges and the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling from the Cleaning & Parks Division, Khlong Toei District Office. As part of the program, students participated in hands-on activities at Princess Mother Public Park, engaging in three key stations: 1️⃣ Plastic Waste Management 2️⃣ Composting with Leaves & Vegetable Planting 3️⃣ Earthworm Composting & Feeding Students also visited one of Bangkok’s largest composting facilities in Onnut, where they gained real-world insights into large-scale organic waste management. Additionally, they explored the Zero Baht Shop, learning about the link between poverty and waste workers and how waste can be transformed into economic opportunities. We were also honored to serve as panel judges for the VERSO HACK competition, hosted by VERSO International School in Bangkok. This event brought together students to develop fundamental tech skills and an entrepreneurial mindset to develop innovative solutions and technologies for social and environmental challenges. Through these impactful programs, Yunus Thailand continues to inspire young minds to drive positive environmental and social change. We’re excited to showcase Ornniti Jullasigkee’s inspiring journey during her internship at Yunus Thailand. A Law graduate from the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), Poke joined us as a Legal Intern on Grameen Thailand replication and extended her time with us, driven by her passion for social impact. We believe this valuable experience will broaden her horizons and further strengthen her commitment to building a more meaningful and inclusive society “I am deeply grateful for this extended internship opportunity. Over the past 6 months, working with Yunus Thailand has made me learn so much more about social business and I got to participate in a soon-to-be very impactful microfinance project, like Grameen Thailand. Other than that, working with one of the best law firms in Thailand, like Chandler MHM, gave me important insights into how law and social business connect. Joining bi-weekly whole team meetings was a great chance to share ideas, learn from experienced colleagues, and see how social businesses operate. I also got to observe broader strategies, which helped me understand the bigger picture of how Yunus Thailand works. This internship taught me how legal frameworks can create social impact. It showed me the importance of teamwork and new ideas. I also improved my time management skills by handling different tasks and making sure I met deadlines efficiently while managing my time at NIDA for my master of laws degree. Lastly, I am very thankful for the friendly and supportive environment my colleagues created. Their guidance and motivation helped me think more critically and creatively. Social Procurement: Driving Inclusive & Sustainable Supply Chains in Thailand 🌏🤝 Featured at the World Economic Forum in Davos, social procurement is reshaping business practices, fostering more inclusive and sustainable supply chains. In Thailand, the Office of Social Enterprise Promotion (OSEP) was established under the Social Entrepreneurship Promotion Act (2019), with 327 registered social enterprises driving impact today. In 2024, Yunus Thailand, in partnership with Yunus Social Business, Social Enterprise Thailand, ChangeFusion, and OSEP, conducted a market analysis on social procurement. Key findings: 💡 50 social enterprises surveyed on B2B opportunities 💡 46% registered with OSEP 💡 78% create both social & environmental impact 💡 41% have procurement contracts lasting less than 6 months Case Study: Moreloop – an award-winning social enterprise revolutionizing Thailand’s fashion industry through the circular economy. By upcycling 89,811 kg of surplus fabric, moreloop has reduced emissions by 1.35M kg of CO2e. With 75% of revenue from B2B sales, clients like Allianz Ayudhya, Accenture, and Deloitte trust moreloop for sustainable uniforms and merchandise. Seaweed Social Business Showcased at The 8th World Turtle Day in KM Park, Satun From January 27 to February 2, 2025, Seaweed Social Business participated in The 8th World Turtle Day event at KM Park, Kampang District, Satun. Organized by the Kamphaeng Subdistrict Administrative Organization, the event aimed to raise awareness about the conservation of endangered Green Sea Turtles and marine biodiversity. Visitors enjoyed educational booths, local food, and engaging activities, including nightly performances by artists, exhibits of various turtle species, and a turtle-themed photo booth, drawing in a wide audience to support marine conservation. Yunus Thailand’s Seaweed Social Business and our women-led seaweed entrepreneurs proudly took part by offering samples of our new Seaweed Cracker product.
